The lead Neurologist position at the SVAMC will encompass the breadth of clinical care, including inpatient consultation, outpatient clinic and management of the Neurology Service along and supervision of other Neurologists assigned. The SVAMC cares for Veterans within the Upstate New York region from the Catskill region in the south, to the New York/Canada border in the North, and between Syracuse and Western Massachusetts from East/West.

In addition to the clinical duties, the SVAMC Neurology Service is closely integrated with the division of Neurology at the Albany Medical College (AMC). The faculty at SVAMC also have academic appointments at AMC. The applicant, if deciding to join the SVAMC, would apply for the faculty position once on board at SVAMC. The Faculty of SVAMC are integrally involved in all teaching and research activities. Teaching responsibilities include resident mentorship during their rotation at the SVAMC and outpatient Neurology clinic preceptor.

Basic Requirements:

  • Citizenship of the United States. Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with Department of Veterans Affairs policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Physical requirements outlined below.

Preferred Experience:

Board Certified in Neurology;

Have interest and prior experience in research and teaching.

Maintain current BLS certification.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Requirements:The incumbent should be physically and mentally capable to perform the examinations, formulate the diagnosis and treatment plan, and educate residents. Physical activity includes sitting, standing (up to 2 hours), walking (up to 2 hours), heavy lifting (45 pounds or over), reaching above the shoulder, and repeated bending. Should be emotionally and mentally stable.
