This vacancy is to fill one Outpatient Psychiatrist (Physician) position at the Albany VA Medical Center. This vacancy will be used to fill one full-time, permanent appointment for day shift, 8am-4:30pm, with rotating call schedule (weekend/evenings, every 8th day). This position is located in the Behavioral Health Outpatient Services department at the Albany Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany, NY. The incumbent will be expected to provide outpatient psychiatric services including evaluation, diagnosis, treatment of patients in that setting, but also in multiple potential team arrangements depending on the needs of the facility. The applicant will be clinically active in the general mental health setting including outpatient and walk-in services, but will have integrated institutional responsibilities including coverage of medical/surgical consultation, coverage of inpatient services, emergency room care, and geriatric Services. It may also include substance abuse services, suboxone clinic, clozaril clinic and PTSD Program, medical/surgical clinics. The incumbent will be expected to assist in delivery of integrated patient centered psychiatric care throughout the facility. Call coverage in a rotating schedule will be required. The applicant will also be expected to provide psychiatric resident supervision and education. Qualification for faculty appointment at Albany Medical Center is required.

Duties include:

Team leadership and providing integrated patient care in multiple inpatient and outpatient settings

Awareness, implementation, and maintenance of JAHCO and VA guidelines for psychiatric care

Staffing specialty clinics, i.e. clozaril, suboxone based on the needs of the facility

Provision of evidence and community based assessment and care of psychiatric patients including current pharmacologic and other standard therapeutic treatments

Provides active supervision and teaching for Albany Medical Center psychiatric residents and other trainees as needed.

Participating in quality improvement initiatives and outcome data initiatives

Providing patient and family health education With a focus on self-management, prevention and wellness based on the patient's goals.

Ordering, conducting, supervising and interpreting diagnostic and laboratory tests. Provision of inpatient consultations to Medicine/Surgery, Emergency Room, Geriatrics and other services based on the needs of the institution

Mentoring, educating, and disseminating information regarding current clinical practices as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Timely completion of clinical documentation

Completion of education requirements

Provision of Telepsychiatry services as needed

Provides on call duties as assigned

Other clinical duties as assigned by Chief of Psychiatry


This is a fulltime position with primary assignment to behavioral health outpatient services but with integrated presence in the facility as described above. It is expected that physician will provide thorough high quality compassionate care to veterans. The physician will be expected to exhibit leadership and team building skills, contribute to program development and educational initiatives, and complete requisite training so as to maintain competence with technological improvements related to patient care. The physician is expected to adapt clinical services to identified needs of patients as determined by the institution. The physician is expected to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other clinicians, staff and management. Call coverage is expected as part of department rotation and other duties, including committee membership(s) as indicated. Compliance with medical staff bylaws, including timely completion of medical records is a requirement.

Basic Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy).
  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained for am institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

Preferred Experience:

  • Board Eligible or Board Certified in Psychiatry and Neurology is preferred

Physical Requirements: The physician should be physically and mentally capable to perform the duties of the position including examinations, formulate the diagnosis and treatment plan and educate residents. Physical activities include sitting, standing (up to 4 hours) walking (up to 2 hours), heavy lifting (45 pounds or over), reaching above the shoulder, and repeated bending. The incumbent should be emotionally and mentally stable; and capable to perform the duties of the position.
