The purpose of this position is to serve as a Pharmacy Resident training position performing a variety of developmental assignments intended to increase or further the knowledge, skills and abilities in the incumbent's area of expertise. The pharmacy residency is an organized, directed, postgraduate training in a defined area of pharmacy practice. The graduate will have refined skills in drug therapy management, disease state management, patient consultation, interviewing techniques, laboratory test interpretation and physical assessment. The graduate will be able to communicate and function effectively with other health care professionals in the IHS and understand their roles and those of the organization.

Using prescribed methods, the incumbent performs clinical assignments of moderate scope and complexity under the general supervision of the supervisor. Assignments are geared to provide on the job experience in the incumbent's area of expertise; provides orientation, training and familiarization with the work processes of the occupational field or specific job; and reinforces and supplements previous experience and education to allow the incumbent to carry out progressively more difficult and responsible tasks.

Assignments are accomplished by applying familiarity with and use of a number of standard principles, methods, and practices as necessary in order to adapt practices and techniques to specific situations; to adjust and correlate data; to recognize discrepancies and deviations in results and to follow an operation through of series of related detailed steps and/or processes in carrying out the work assignments. May be required to make tentative or preliminary selections and adaptations of alternatives after approval by the supervisor.

The resident carries out clinical pharmacy functions of drug selection, compounding and dispensing which involves a varied range of therapeutic agents. The resident provides information and consultative advice to the prescribing doctor on contraindications and side effects of drugs. The resident actively participates in inter-and intra-departmental hospital training programs for such groups as physicians, nurses, and pharmacists. Pharmacist provides physical assessments and under medical staff approval and local privileging can assess patient and be able to adjust medication.

For GS-9, applicants must demonstrate successful completion of a 5-year course of study leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in pharmacy from an approved pharmacy school, or 1 year of professional pharmacy experience equivalent to at least GS-7.

Medical Requirement – Applicants must be able to distinguish basic colors.

Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP) and Direct Hiring (DH) Authority.
