The Augusta Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center is a two-division Medical Center that provides tertiary care in medicine, surgery, neurology, psychiatry, rehabilitation medicine, and spinal cord injury. Work Schedule:Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Location of position: Charlie Norwood VAMC Downtown Division, Primary Care Service Line

The Physician Assistant will perform the following duties:

  • Reports to the Medical Director of Compensation and Pension (C&P;) and performs legal examinations of Veterans for determination of service connection and/or disability compensation, as well as non-service connected pensions and examinations for special Veteran population such as Former Prisoners of War, Registry exams and various other legally requested examinations.

  • Performs history and physical examinations, orders and evaluates appropriate diagnostic studies, and act within the guidelines and quality indicators set forth by the VA Central Office of Disability and Medical Assessment (DMA).

  • Performs Compensation and Pension/IDES examinations for all claimed medical conditions; writes medical opinions to provide very specific information to ensure proper evaluation of the claimed disability by non-medical adjudicating officials of the Veterans Benefits Administration and courts Generates Compensation and Pension/IDES exam reports utilizing CAPRI templates for the official record of the Veterans C&P;/IDES examination; and functions as a resource person to other examiners.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of and possesses the ability to evaluate Veterans based upon psychosocial, cultural, safety and other age related factors as noted in the competencies described in department and or unit specific policies and procedures.

  • Enters reviews, completes, and releases all examination findings in a timely manner in accordance with medical center policy. Performs in the C&P; Completion Clinic; review incoming C&P; exam requests.

  • Participation in group meetings, committee/special project or activity assignments including QI review work.

  • Communicates and interacts appropriately and courteously with all internal and external customers and maintains confidentiality of electronic, written, and/or verbal patient/employee information.

  • In addition, this position will have the ability to perform occupational health duties within the confines of the Employee Health Unit of the Charlie Norwood VAMC, with job duties including the performance of pre-placement medical examinations, the evaluation and treatment of uncomplicated worker's compensation injuries, and providing oversight and monitoring of health maintenance and screening programs for employees, which may include duties related to initial and follow-up TB screening among hospital employees, initial evaluation and follow-up of blood-borne pathogen exposures among hospital employees.

  • Duties will also include health maintenance and disease prevention functions including smoking cessation and annual influenza vaccination programs.

Physician Assistant Qualifications:

*Citizenship: U.S Citizenship is required (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens).

*English Language Proficiency: Applicants appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d).

*Certification: (1) Current and continuous certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is required for employment in VHA. (2) If a PA's NCCPA certification is suspended, revoked or expires, the PA must be removed from the occupation which may result in termination of employment.

*Basic Education: Candidate must meet the following:

(1) Graduate of a PA training program, or of a surgical assistant program which is accredited by the

Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its

predecessor organizations; *and *(2) A Bachelor's degree from an accredited PA training program or in another health sciences related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

Physical Requirements (Physician Assistant):The work is predominantly sedentary in nature. Some work may require walking, standing, and sitting. Employee may be required to adjust medical equipment and, on rare occasions, may move special equipment from one location to another within the same office. Work primarily occurs in a clinic or hospital setting. Involves moderate risks or discomforts that require special safety precautions, e.g., working around moving parts, carts, or machines; exposure to contagious diseases or irritant chemicals. Employees may be required to use protective clothing or gear, such as masks, gowns, coats, boots, goggles, gloves, or shields. The employee works in an office or clinical environment that is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated.
