The Bay Pines VA Healthcare System (VAHCS) is located on 337 acres situated on the Gulf of Mexico in Bay Pines, FL. The Bay Pines VAHCS is part of the VISN 8 Sunshine Healthcare Network and services the healthcare needs of America's Veterans in West Central and Southwestern coastal Florida. BPVAHCS provides care to a veteran population of more than one million in Florida and treats approximately 98,000 unique veterans annually. The medical center serves as a referral center for this area with 397 operating beds with care provided in almost all medical and surgical specialties and subspecialties as well as inpatient residential and long term care. Bay Pines, Florida is home to several beaches and parks. Florida is known as the "sunshine" state with an average of approximately 240 days of sunshine a year! The area boasts numerous extracurricular activities and sporting events each year with three major sports franchises represented within the Tampa Bay area. The Nurse Manager is a subject matter expert in ambulatory/primary care, Women's Health and Patient Aligned Care Teams. He/she plans, directs, and coordinates the work functions and activities of the assigned areas to assure clear line of responsibility and accountability. He/she directs and maintains a comprehensive improvement program to ensure that programs and services meet policy and accrediting standards for multiple accrediting bodies including The Joint Commission, as one example. He/she assists in the development, implementation, assessment, and evaluation of professional Nursing standards of care.

The Nurse Manager oversees and directs the daily operations of assigned staff within the Primary Care area. He/she writes the performance evaluations and proficiencies for the assigned staff in a timely manner as required, identifying technical, patient care skills and competencies for assigned duties. The Nurse Manager in collaboration with the Chief Nurse of Primary Care determines the priorities, policies, and procedures to efficiently and effectively accomplish Bay Pines VA Healthcare System's objectives and plans for nursing care.

The Nurse Manager is a hiring manager who is sensitive to cultural diversity, race, gender, and other individual differences in the workforce and manages workforce diversity. He/she interviews and selects employees. He/she develops staff by sharing power and authority. The Nurse Manager promotes lower levels of leadership. The Nurse Manager shares successes and rewards with staff, and ensures staff is properly selected, utilized, appraised, developed, and treated fairly. He/she arbitrates disputes across multidisciplinary lines within his/her work group.

The Nurse Manger designs and implements a customized approach for the orientation, training, and development of employees that ensures the long range stability and capability of the work group to function effectively.

The Nurse Manager represents management and the workgroup in the negotiation and resolution of employee grievances and conflicts according to established policy regarding the handling of such matters. He/she refers disciplinary actions to Human Resources as needed and enforces Bay Pines VA Healthcare Systems procedures and policies.

The Nurse Manager participates in various hospital, VISN committees and community outreach functions. He/she performs full performance level professional nursing practice.

The Nurse Manager enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reviewing current literature, and attending in-service meetings and workshops.

Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. *Grade Determinations: * The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:

  • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.

  • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; ORa Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; ORa Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience.

Preferred Experience:

  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years' experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years' experience.

  • BLS required before placement.

  • Master's degree in Nursing Preferred.

  • National Certification in Case Management or Nursing Administration preferred.

  • Three to five years of professional experience with at least one year in the supervisory role.
