The shop located in Bellingham, has an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to be a part of ensuring the safety and wellbeing of WSDOT employees. We are looking for truck and heavy equipment mechanics to inspect, diagnose, repair, design components for, and perform preventative maintenance on a variety of light and heavy trucks and highway maintenance equipment. These positions work to overhaul and repair all types of diesel and gasoline engines and vehicle components and also concentrate on troubleshooting and repairing electrical, hydraulic, and electronic control systems used in automotive, heavy, marine, and specialized equipment.

This position will perform the following work:

  • Troubleshoot, repair, or replace components related to hydraulic systems, electronic engine controls, anti-lock brakes, variable message sign boards, and various other electronic systems.
  • Repair, overhaul, and maintain steering and suspension systems.
  • Troubleshoot, overhaul, or rebuild all types of gear boxes such as manual and automatic transmissions, differentials, angle boxes, reduction boxes, and transfer cases.
  • Repair, design, and troubleshoot all types of hydraulic systems.
  • Troubleshoot and repair brake systems of all types, including air and hydraulic.
  • Fabricate, weld and install additional equipment to vehicles such as arrow board mounts, emergency light mount brackets, and tool box mount brackets.
  • Work with supervisor to determine accident damage and repair estimates, or whether equipment should be replaced.
  • Complete reports on repairs, accidents, inventory and ordering items.

An ideal candidate for this position will have:

  • Incumbent should furnish and maintain a basic set of hand tools.
  • Possess a CDL, class 'A' with endorsement 'N' and without airbrake restrictions OR the ability to obtain one within 6 months of employment.
  • Experience using computerized diagnostic equipment and emission testing equipment.
  • Working knowledge of hydraulic pumps, motor, valves, and hydrostatic drives.
  • Three years' experience with preventative maintenance or repairs or experience as a journey level mechanic.
  • Ability to lift and move items weighing over 50lbs. with assistance and up to 50lbs. without assistance.
  • Vocational/technical training in heavy equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Journey-level standing as a heavy equipment mechanic.
  • Self-motivated, organized, computer savvy, and possess excellent mechanical and technical skills.
  • Working knowledge of hydraulic pumps, motor, valves, and hydrostatic drives.
  • Ability to work as a team with other technicians.


This position is covered by a union shop provision. Therefore, as a condition of employment, candidates who are appointed are required to become members of the WFSE, or arrange to pay to that union a fee equivalent to its regular monthly dues. The union shop provision shall be effective on the first day of the month following the employee's initial 30 days in this classification.
