Your tasks and responsibilities
The purpose of the Deputy Director Community Relations role is to create a positive relationship and presence for Bayer within the San Francisco Bay Area communities by managing local community relations, external communications, and public affairs for Bayer’s Pharmaceuticals Division in Berkeley and San Francisco. In this capacity, the position will be responsible for strategic planning and implementation of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and corporate citizenship programs including philanthropy, employee volunteerism and environmental stewardship. The position is also accountable for oversight and management of Bayer’s Development Agreement (DA) with the City of Berkeley, a 30 year private-public partnership that was established in 1992 to facilitate development of the Bayer facility in a manner that also supports the best interests of the public and the City.
The primary responsibilities of this role, Deputy Director Community Relations, are to: 1.DEVELOPMENT AGREEMENT: Oversees Bayer’s Development Agreement (DA) with the City of Berkeley to ensure compliance with and efficient utilization of Agreement: producing and presenting annual reports; providing support for various Bayer departments in navigating the City’s site development and related permit processes; negotiating with the City and citizenry on specific DA elements and site development; and coordinating community relations including response to citizen complaints;. An essential part of this role is also maintaining and evolving relationships with key City staff and elected officials; 2.CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY (CSR): Develops and manages strategic, local CSR programs including local philanthropy, employee volunteerism, and leadership in key policy areas that enable the success of site operations. Develops and leads community and industry partnerships to further Bayer’s CSR position and aligns resources to create more significant community and company impact; 3.COMMUNITY RELATIONS: Responsible for building and sustaining strong relationships with key stakeholders in the Bay Area including industry leaders, city and regional elected officials, community partners, and local academic / university partners. Serves as the primary liaison and facilitator of STEM education outreach and awareness with partners. Develops strategy and outreach plan for Bay Area sites and leaders to establish and maintain a respected Bayer voice as a recognized life sciences community leader; 4.EXTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS: Supports strategic planning and implementation of external communications programs and initiatives, particularly those in the Bay Area. Designs and executes external programs, events and initiatives that highlight Bayer’s CSR work to generate positive exposure and awareness for Bayer regionally and nationally; 5.PUBLIC AFFAIRS: Represents Bayer in various local and regional policy forums and helps drive local public affairs projects in issues related to economic development, workforce development and education, environmental sustainability, and related industry issues; 6.INTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS: Supports Berkeley and San Francisco internal communications programs and initiatives especially those that relate to Corporate Social Responsibility; 7.ISSUES MANAGEMENT: Supports communications and government affairs team on local and regional media relations opportunities and issues management activities, especially those that involve community partners and local government officials.

More specifically related to this position, Bayer seeks an incumbent who possesses the following: •BA/BS preferably a bachelor’s degree in journalism or public administration; •12+ years related work experience, ideally with 8 years of experience in community relations management; •Administration of non-profit corporate funding / philanthropy; •External communications and/or media relations experience; •Strong acumen for budgeting and financial administration; •Outstanding public speaking, verbal and written skills; •Experience navigating public / private partnerships; •Executive leadership coaching and counsel; •Experience in pharmaceutical industry / issues preferred.
