Department Description: Environmental Health and Safety is responsible for overall environmental safety of the organization including staff, visitors and patients. Scope includes main campus, research locations, off-sites such as Pain Center, Bowdoin, Chelsea, Lexington, Chestnut Hill and Needham Cancer Center. This is a fulltime 40 hours per week position with hours from 8.00am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday.Job Location: Boston, MAReq ID: 18344BRJob Summary: Safety Officer will be assigned to be primarily accountable for a specific program/portfolio team responsibilities and outcomes. Team responsibilities and accountabilities will be under the daily direction of the Senior Environmental Health and Safety Officer. This position is responsible for providing in-depth technical, regulatory and program support over a wide range of institutional safety officer functions. Will be assigned to work specifically within either the Chemcial Safety or Life Safety Team depending on needs. May be called upon to assist with other team programs as needed. This position interacts and, at times, provides a leadership role within hospital management and supervisory staff to assist with unit based safety program development and implementation.
Implements the components of the chemical safety and compliance program. Provides safety field expertise and support to team portfolio/programs including hazardous materials, waste water, research safety, IACUC reviews and hazardous material response. May be directly responsible for these areas depending on EH&S team responsibilities.
Supports the emergency preparedness and response capabilities. Responds to fire and chemical spills during normal and off-hours (on-call). Investigates and evaluates incidents, accidents and safety concerns as needed. Develops recommendations and implements corrective measures. Acts as a field expert in safety projects, initiatives and concerns. May serve as designated Safety Officer.
Implements the components of the safety compliance program. Provides field expertise and support for properly implementing fire and life safety, safety, OSHA, interim life safety, PPE and other relevant programs. May be directly responsible for these areas depending on EH&S team responsibilities.
Administers safety training and related regulatory compliance training programs for staff. Ensures compliance with various acts and ordinances and updates training plans and other safety information.
Demonstrates current and working knowledge of safety regulations to identify, review and assess safety compliance in all medical center environments. Performs risk assessment and summarizes key aspects of regulatory status in format for reports.
Bachelor's degree required in Environmental Health and Safety Sciences.. Bachelor's degree preferred in Environmental Sciences
1-3 years related work experience required.
Requires strong knowledge of environmental health and safety regulations and requirements and the equipment processes and services of the medical center that are goverened by them
Demonstrates relevant certifications in areas such as: OSHA Hazwoper, General Duty/business, RCRA, DOT, IATA, Emergency Response, Asbestos Inspector, MWRA Operator License.
May be required to work off-hours, respond to urgent matters, and will participate in managing the EH&S on-call pager.
Advanced skills with Microsoft applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access and other web-based applications. May produce complex documents, perform analysis and maintain databases.
Prefer certifications in at least one of the following areas: CIH, CSP and HEM.
Must be able to wear a respirator and other personal protective equipment.
