Department Description: nullJob Location: Boston, MAReq ID: 18524BRJob Summary: Provides genetic counseling to patients regarding hereditary syndromes. Counsels patients and families concerning genetic issues. Serves as a resource to physicians, staff, and other genetic counselors regarding genetic issues.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Counsels patients and families concerning genetic issues which typically involves genetic or other testing. Interviews and evaluates patients' medical and genetic information. Recommends and coordinates additional testing and referrals.

  • Provides extensive patient contact; explains procedures and risks, aids with decision-making, and provides psychosocial counseling as needed and follow-up.

  • Maintains appropriate records including patient information, progress notes and charts, statistics, and encounter forms. Provides summary letters and other necessary documentation to referring providers and patients.

  • Serves as resource to patients, providers, residents, and others regarding genetic counseling issues. Works directly and meets regularly with administrative management and Medical Director regarding the genetics counseling program.

  • Maintains current knowledge regarding trends and developments in the field of genetics from multiple professional sources. Attends genetics conferences and presentations.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Genetic Counseling in progress and degree completed prior to start date required.

  • 0-1 years related work experience required.

  • Provisional Genetic Counselor License required prior to start date.

  • Full Genetic Counselor License required with 6 months of employment.

  • Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.

  • Written Communications: Ability to summarize and communicate in English moderately complex information in varied written formats to internal and external customers.

  • Oral Communications: Ability to comprehend and communicate complex verbal information in English to medical center staff, patients, families and external customers.

  • Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of concepts, practices and policies with the ability to use them in complex varied situations.

  • Team Work: Ability to work collaboratively in small teams to improve the operations of immediate work group by offering ideas, identifying issues, and respecting team members.

  • Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service to patients, visitors, staff and external customers in a professional, service-oriented, respectful manner using skills in active listening and problem solving. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
