Department Description: Department: Internal Medicine – Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism

The principal investigator works in an established endocrinology laboratory. The primary focus of the lab is to elucidate the role of hormones in human physiology and pathophysiology focusing on appetite, weight and glucose regulation. The lab manager oversees the complete function of the lab, contributing to the publication of novel medical findings affecting patients with obesity, diabetes, hormone deficiencies, and related diseases.

Principal duties and responsibilities:

Clinical Research Duties

  1. Aids with clinical research projects such as by interacting with patients to do consenting and neurocognitive testing.

  2. Assists investigator with correspondence with the Institutional Review Board (IRB).

  3. Assist in managing and coordinating research studies by entering data, assisting with data analysis, and being involved in clinical laboratory work such as running biological assays and processing serum samples from patients.

4.Handle scheduling of subjects for inpatient and outpatient visits, including coordinating subjects schedules with the GCRC, arranging for appropriate tests (e.g. body composition, bone density, metabolic, radiology testing), communicating with subjects to confirm appointments, and maintaining accurate appointment book.

  1. Performs literature searches and library investigations as they relate to the research and/or as assigned.

Basic Research Duties

  1. Preparing reagents, media and solutions as needed.

  2. Running following techniques:

• Immunoassays (RIAs, IRMAs, ELISAs) on serum and culture supernatants

• Plasmid construction including cloning, heat shock transformation and isolation of DNA from bacteria. Transient transfection of plasmids.

• mRNA and protein preparation from cell cultures and tissues

• Western blots, Bradford assays, quantitative and qualitative PCR

• Reporter assay experiments (e.g. Luciferase), viability, cell proliferation and apoptosis assays, FACS

• Run cell culture experiments as well as animal physiology experiments

• Run immunohistochemistry protocols

  1. Maintaining careful records of all procedures, tests and results

  2. Helping to maintain the laboratory in a clean and orderly manner

Other Duties (Both clinical and basic research)

  1. Attending necessary safety courses, training sessions, and educational seminars.

  2. Order necessary materials and reagents, communicate verbally or otherwise wirh sponsors and collaborators, provide secretarial and other support to team members as needed and directed by the lab head, assist in up keeping the group's web site and R drive, , assist lab members with organizational matters under the supervision of lab head and fellows.

  3. Manage study protocols, data collection and analysis instruments in collaboration with management, subcontractors, investigators and other constituents. Develop, organize and implement study protocols and update study’s regulatory documents, Manual of Operations accordingly, assisting with logistics of scheduling and performing study visits, maintaining careful and meticulous records, including up-to-date patient census records and case report forms.Job Location: Boston, MAReq ID: 18522BRJob Summary: Responsible for the daily operations of the laboratory including both administrative duties and direct involvement in the research endeavors of the lab.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Independently responsible for the daily operations of the laboratory including both administrative duties and direct involvement in the research endeavors of the lab.

  • Coordinates and oversees the work of research personnel; implements research schedules and ensures the quality of lab procedures.

  • Remains current in the technologies used in the lab and participates in improving operations of the lab, both administratively and scientifically. Recommends and implements changes.

  • Supervises, orients and trains staff; ensures compliance to lab safety guidelines and accurate record keeping. May oversee lab equipment needs, inventory and the ordering of common lab supplies. .

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Life Sciences or Related Field required. Master's degree preferred.

  • 5-8 years related work experience required.

  • BA/BS and 5-7 years' progressively more resonsible experience OR MA/MS and 5+ years experience

  • Advanced skills with Microsoft applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access and other web-based applications. May produce complex documents, perform analysis and maintain databases.


  • Written Communications: Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in written English with internal and external customers.

  • Oral Communications: Ability to comprehend and converse in English to communicate effectively with medical center staff, patients, families and external customers.

  • Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of concepts, practices and policies with the ability to use them in complex varied situations.
