Job Overview

The Indian Health Service (IHS) is the principal federal health care provider and health advocate for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN). The IHS goal is to raise Indian health status to the highest possible level. IHS provides leadership and direction to programs and activities designed to improve health outcomes to over 1.9 million AI/AN through a system of IHS, Tribal, and Urban operated facilities and programs.

The position of Nurse Practitioner is located at the Blackfeet Service Unit, Division of Professional Services, Branch of Medical Staff Services, Browning, Montana or Heart Butte, Montana. This position reports to the Supervisory Nurse Practitioner.

  • Analyze and interpret patients' histories, symptoms, physical findings, or diagnostic information to develop appropriate diagnoses.
  • Develop treatment plans based on scientific rationale, standards of care, and professional practice guidelines.
  • Diagnose or treat acute health care problems such as illnesses, infections, and injuries.
  • Prescribe medications based on efficacy, safety, dosage and frequencies.
  • Counsel patients about drug regimen and possible side effects or interactions with other substances such as food supplements, over-the-counter (OTC) medications, and herbal remedies.
  • Educate patients about self-management of acute or chronic illnesses, tailoring instructions to patients' individual circumstances.
  • Involves the knowledge of human behavior and performance, individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; psychological methods; and assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders.

Education: Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant. Registration: Applicants must have active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below-


Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following types of tasks:

GS-9: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 grade level OR 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education or a master's or equivalent degree. GS-11: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 grade level OR Completion of all requirements for a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education. GS-12: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. GS-13: 1 year of specialized experience as Nurse Practitioner equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for all grade levels and positions for which both education and experience are acceptable.

Evaluation of Experience Experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. At GS-9 and above, many positions require experience in a specialty area of nursing.

Examples of qualifying experience at the GS-9 grade level: provide direct and comprehensive primary, preventive and therapeutic medical and nursing care to patients. Assignments at this level are generally developmental for new Nurse Practitioner graduates.

Examples of qualifying experience at the GS-11 grade level: provide direct and comprehensive primary, preventive and therapeutic medical and nursing care to patients. Assignments at this level are progressively more difficult, in order to expand diagnostic and therapeutic skills, with supervisor or senior employee providing assistance on unusual problems.

Examples of qualifying experience at the GS-12 grade level: provide direct and comprehensive primary, preventive and therapeutic medical and nursing care for patients, as well as counseling and/or coordinating services and participating with other disciplines in reviewing the program. Taking case histories, conducting physical examinations, and ordering laboratory studies during clinic visits. May carry out special procedures such as giving injections or other medication, apply or change dressing, perform lumbar punctures, or suture minor laceration.

Examples of qualifying experience at the GS-13 grade level: On a more independent level provide medical care to patients , prescribing medications, and educating or counseling patients and/or family members regarding treatment and/or medical care, evaluating patients; formulating and/or modifying therapeutic plans, and/or prescribing medications.

Evaluation of Education Graduate-level education must have been in nursing with a concentration in a field of nursing (e.g., teaching, a clinical specialty, research, administration, etc.) or in a closely related non-nursing field directly applicable to the requirements of the position to be filled. SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR Selective factors are knowledge, skills, abilities, or special qualifications that are in addition to the minimum requirements in a qualification standard, but are determined to be essential to perform the duties and responsibilities of this position.
