This is a full time Temporary position with the USFWS, Region 5, Chesapeake Marshland NWR Complex, Blackwater NWR located in Cambridge, MD. This position is initially not-to-exceed 6 months and may be extended up to a total of 2 years without re-advertisement. This position may be terminated at any time due to lack of work, lack of funds, or as the needs of the Service dictate.

This position is located on a fire crew as a crew member within the fire management organization. The purpose of the position is wildland fire suppression/management/control, as a skilled firefighter on an engine, helitack module, or hand crew. Other wildland fire related duties might involve fire prevention, patrol, detection, or prescribed burning. The incumbent will also be involved with the maintenance and repair of firefighting tools, equipment, and facilities , and will receive firefighting training.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Rigorous fieldwork requires above average physical performance, endurance and superior conditioning. Requires prolonged standing, walking over uneven ground, and recurring bending, reaching, lifting and carrying of items weighting over 50 pounds and shared lifting and carrying of heavier items. Includes strenuous activities in emergencies under adverse environmental conditions and over extended periods of time. Operation of some specialized fire equipment can place extended physical stress on incumbent during fire activities. Incumbent is subject to medical examination and must pass the work capacity test for arduous positions. WORK ENVIRONMENT:Work is performed in forest and desert environments; surfaces may be uneven, rocky, covered with thick vegetation, smoky conditions, etc. Temperatures vary from above 100 degrees F to below freezing. Risks include smoke inhalation, fire entrapment, snake or insect bites and stings, exposure to excessive machinery noise, and falling and rolling material. Must adjust and cope with exposure to weather elements, dust and smoke, poor sleeping and eating conditions under unpredictable sets of circumstances. May be required to live in backcountry camps for extended periods of time. Personal protective equipment must be worn (boots, hardhat, gloves, flame resistant clothing, etc.).

*Selective Factor: *You must possess a minimum of 90 days of wildland firefighting experience.* Wildland fire experience is defined as any non-structure fire that occurs in the wildland. Wildland firefighting experience is gained through work on the fire line in containment, control, suppression or use of wildland fire. This experience can be met by serving in a temporary, seasonal or equivalent private sector fire position. Periods of wildland firefighting experience gained through militia and rural fire departments can also be credited. *Proof of the 90-day experience must be documented in your resume. If you do not show that you meet this requirement, you will not be given further consideration for this position.

Basic Qualifications

In order to be qualified for this position at the GS-4 grade level you must possess:

6 months of general AND 6 months of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-3 level in the Federal service. General experience can be any type of work experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. Examples of specialized experience would include on-the-line wildland fire experience in forest fire control, prevention or suppression work as a trainee wildland firefighter;


2 years of study above high school, 60 semester hours, which included 12 semester hours in courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, wildland fire science, or mathematics. No more than 3 semester hours of mathematics is creditable toward this requirement. You must submit a copy of your college transcripts


An equivalent combination of experience and education, which when combined, equals 100% of the qualifications requirement.* You must submit a copy of your college transcripts*.

Note: Seasonal experience may also be creditable. A season of experience is considered to be a period of no less than 3 months of continuous employment on a seasonal basis. Shorter periods may be combined to make a season, provided a total of at least 3 months' experience is shown. For any period where the work exceeded 3 months, the excess work is credited towards an additional season of experience. 4 seasons of experience may be used to qualify for GS-4. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include:
