The licensed practical nurse will maintain acceptable standards of practice within a Primary and Preventive Care Line Health Care setting under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse or provider. He/she will be accountable for ensuring the delivery of safe nursing care for a group of patients based on their role in the nursing process, taking into consideration each patient's developmental stage, progressing from young adult to geriatric stage. Expected to comply with all mandated annual review requirements, rotate to clinical areas as assigned and take responsibility for attending in-services and continuing education.
The LPN delivers fundamental, knowledge-based care to assigned clients while developing technical competencies.
The LPN is expected to work in collaboration with the registered nurse and/or providers from the Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) within their scope of practice, according to policies, training and accepted practice.
The LPN functions under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and/or provider and is directly responsible to the PPCL Manager.
The function of the LPN is to provide quality nursing care to Veterans.
The LPN is expected to work as a vital team member in collaboration with the PACT team and the ancillary departments to provide excellent quality patient care.
The LPN collects and accessions specimens; prepares specimens for various automated urinalysis.
Obtain blood samples by venipuncture; assures that proper specimens are obtained and physiological properties and test requirements are maintained until actual testing procedure; assures proper routing of specimen and requisitions; checks the requisitions for proper patient and specimen data.
The LPN informs patients on specimen collection procedures to be performed. Reviews laboratory request slips to ensure all required information is present.
Determines types of specimens to be collected and if proper patient preparation has been accomplished.
Applies sterile dressing to site and instructs patients on care required to prevent infection and/or bruising.
Note:IV procedure/practice must conform to Ohio Nurse Practice Act and completion of LPN Certified IV Course. (Core skills are defined as skills found within the curriculum of an accredited school of nursing.)
Work Schedule:**Monday - Friday, 8 am to 4:30 pm or 7:30 am to 4 pm. Weekends and evenings may apply.

Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and/or accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) at the time the program was completed by the applicant. Health care education in the military service or training in the military service which is accepted by the licensing body in the jurisdiction in which the individual is licensed as qualifying for full LPN/LVN licensure will be accepted as meeting the education requirements for VHA employment.

Grade Determination: *In addition to the basic requirements stated in section A, the following qualification criteria must be met for each grade. * The candidate's qualifications must clearly demonstrate the level of competence required for the grade.
GS-3. None beyond the basic requirements. [LPNs at this grade level are expected to perform all duties within the scope of their license (e.g., medication administration); however, completed work may require routine or detailed higher level review depending upon the complexity of the duties involved.]
GS-4. Six months of qualifying experience as an LPN or LVN; or
(a) Graduation from an approved school (which may be waived as provided in paragraph 4 of Section C) and one year of experience that involved nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other supervised medical, nursing, or patient care facility that provided a practical knowledge of human body structure and sterile techniques and procedures; or
(b) Graduation from an approved school of at least 24 months duration.
(c) LPNs at the GS-4 grade level perform all duties expected of employees at the GS-3 grade level; however, they are expected to exercise greater judgment, require less supervision, and to operate in accordance with all established policies, procedure, and techniques.]
(a) Completion of at least 1 year of qualifying experience at the GS-4 level or equivalent.
(b) Demonstrated knowledge and ability to provide a full range of practical nursing care to patients with a variety of physical and/or behavioral problems.
(c) Demonstrated ability to serve as a responsible member of the nursing team and interact in an appropriate manner with patients, family members, professional and other supportive personnel involved in the delivery of] patient care, incorporating acceptable, established customer service standards into practice.
(d) Knowledge and skill sufficient to prepare, administer, and appropriately document actions taken specific to commonly prescribed oral, topical, subcutaneous, intramuscular, and/or intravenous medications as permitted by approved local facility policies and procedures.
(e) Knowledge and ability to recognize the need for and to institute emergency measures when indicated, promptly seek the assistance of the RN or MD/DO, and assist in resuscitation procedures in cardiac and/or pulmonary arrest.
(f) Recognizes and appropriately responds to breakage/malfunction or loss of equipment, safety hazards, and supply deficiencies, promptly reporting to appropriate personnel for corrective action.
(g) Completed work is under the general supervision of an RN or MD/DO. Individuals at this grade level are expected to have a broad working knowledge of practical nursing procedures. However, completion of more complex practices or procedures may be subject to closer higher-level review.]
