The Global Business Development & Licensing (BD&L) department is part of the Global Strategy & Business Development (S&BD) unit, a Global Enabling Function within Sanofi Group. The mission of Global BD&L is to seek and execute external growth initiatives to address the Sanofi Group´s strategic priorities. This mission is fully supporting Sanofi´s 2015-2020 strategic roadmap, specially aligned with the following strategic priorities: Reshape the portfolio and Sustain innovation in R&D.

The key activities of Global BD&L are the scouting, evaluation, structuring, negotiation and closing of strategic alliances with external companies beyond Sanofi Group, involving products and other product-related assets.

The main responsibilities of Global BD&L include:

  • Seek and execute external growth and collaborations opportunities (Alliances and Licensing) in coherence with the Group´s strategy;

Evaluate the economic interest of external projects maximizing value creation for the Group.

Job Purpose / Description of the position

The Research Transaction Director position is a key enabler of the achievement of Sanofi’s corporate objectives of reshaping our portfolio and accelerating growth by executing the right licensing and collaboration opportunities. Expanding the size of Sanofi’s Research Portfolio (pre-IND stage projects) is essential for the organization to achieve its objective of one new drug approval per year. The Research Transaction team will provide dedicated business development resources towards achieving this goal.

The main focus of the Research Transaction Director is to support transaction execution across all therapeutic areas and technology platforms, with a focus on pre-IND stage opportunities (M0-M2). Transactions will include in-licensing, research collaborations, option, and co-development agreements in addition to other types of innovative partnerships such as consortiums. The Research Transaction Associate will drive strategic business development initiatives and partnering initiatives to expand Sanofi’s Research Portfolio.

Mission and Objectives / Key Accountabilities

  • With guidance from the Research Transaction Head as relevant, lead business development transactions for Research stage opportunities across all therapeutic areas and platform technologies

o Lead cross-functional teams including senior scientific, technical, finance, and commercial representatives to development optimal deal structures

o Lead teams in business case development, financial modeling, and valuation analysis incorporating probability, time, cost, budget impacts, and returns to allow fro optimal strategic and investment decision making

o Develop deal structures and term sheets; independently negotiate deal terms with 3rd parties

o Work closely with Legal on contract development and execution

o Present opportunities and make recommendations to senior management

  • Interface/align with External Innovation Leads to prioritize Research stage opportunities, including setting goals for the number of M0-M2 opportunities to be added to the portfolio for each therapeutic area;

  • Develop and maintain relationships with a wide array of industry participants including management teams at biotechnology and pharma companies, venture capitalists, academic institutions, and investment bankers

Represent Sanofi at industry, investor, and partnering conferences


Basic Qualifications:


  • BA/BS required; MBA, MD, or scientific PhD is very strongly preferred

Experience & Knowledge

  • 5 years of work experience in the biotech/pharma industry

  • Demonstrated track record of working cross-functionally with scientific, finance, and/or commercial team members

  • Deep knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry, especially early stage drug discovery and development

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including strong presentation skills

  • Strong desire to pursue a career in business development

  • Valid passport and ability to travel domestically and internationally 20-30%

  • Experience in interacting in a highly professional manner with senior executives both within the parent organization and with partner companies

  • Demonstrated ability to function in an dynamic environment with rapidly changing activities and priorities

  • Demonstrated ability to work in complex matrix and cross-cultural enviroment

  • Excellent competencies in technical and scientific comprehension, learning and analytical capacity, problem-solving, multi-tasking, and decision making

  • Highly motivated and team-oriented professional eager to face business challenges, share experiences and add sustainable value to the organization

  • Prior experience in negotiating/executing research partnerships and licensing agreements in pharma, biotech, and/or academia


Fluency in written and spoken English.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Multi-country and/or multi-functional experience

  • Second degree in a business discipline such as an MBA, finance/accounting degree, or legal degree
