  • Reshape the portfolio, focusing on businesses where Sanofi can sustain leadership or build competitive positions

  • Deliver outstanding launches, with a particular focus on 6 major products

  • Sustain innovation in R&D, by strengthening the pipeline and delivering on key collaborations such as Regeneron, Alynylam, and Voyager

  • Simplify the organization. This includes reshaping the plant network, cost reduction to free up funds for reinvestment, and moving to the new global business unit organization.

The Corporate Strategy function at Sanofi includes strategy business partners for the GBUs, a team of corporate strategy directors, teams for functional strategies including R&D, centers of excellence for Insights and Analytics and Digital, and the new Portfolio Analytics team.

Global Portfolio Analytics’ overarching objective is to ensure a robust valuation and prioritization of the R&D portfolio (including LCM). The team will work with key stakeholders in the R&D organization and the GBUs to provide support to leadership decision-making. The team’s remit is to:

1. By providing standard tools and an effective review process, ensure project valuation (including POS calculation, business case) is done on a rigorous and comparable basis across Sanofi

2. Provide challenge to project teams’ assumptions around probability of success and valuation, via

 Quantitative analysis of previous Sanofi performance and external benchmarks

 Coordinating internal review/debate workshops from both R&D and commercial perspectives

 Reviewing findings with external experts (where relevant) and internal senior leadership

3. Use advanced analytics to inform and shape decision making by Global Project Teams (GPTs) and senior leadership (e.g., scenario analysis, decision trees, etc)

4. Consolidate analyses into a holistic portfolio view for analysis (pipeline volume, continuity, value) and prioritization

5. Facilitate and orchestrate prioritization and trade-off discussion among senior leaders.

1. Work with Global Project Teams to understand key R&D and commercial assumptions

 Conduct interviews and meetings with GPTs to review and understand assumptions underlying estimates of (for example) probability of success, pricing, peak year sales, time to market, market share growth rate, etc.

2. Challenge GPTs’ assumptions where necessary, informed by internal and external benchmarks

 Collaborate with groups across Sanofi to synthesize benchmarks reflecting both internal and industry-wide performance

 Compare benchmarks to assumptions made by GPTs, raise discrepancies to GPT and work toward resolution

3. Create an integrated portfolio view communicating a draft project prioritization

 Develop and implement methodology to prioritize projects, incorporating scientific/medical, financial, operational, and strategic components

 Use this method to generate and refine an initial prioritization of the project portfolio

4. Orchestrate and participate in internal review of prioritized portfolio at appropriate venues (R&D / Commercial governance meetings, senior leadership meetings), as well as trade-off discussions

 Based on previous discussions, communicate perspectives of GPTs on key project attributes that influence project priority

 Contribute to leadership discussion of trade-offs across TAs/Platforms, with a view of portfolio diversification vs focus, strengthening existing franchises vs innovation, and early vs late stage balance



We are seeking an experienced strategy professional with the following background:

 Strategy consulting experience from a leading firm with at least 5 year experience in Life Sciences with both R&D and Commercial exposure.

 Excellent academics, educated to postgraduate level preferably in the life sciences area (MD, PharmD, Science PhD)

 Strong leadership and interpersonal skills / ability to work with senior members of the organization and appropriately challenge their assumptions

 Deep understanding and experience with the pharma development process and market asssessments; ability to spot discrepancies, insufficiently robust assumptions and inflated figures

 Outstanding ability to frame issues, problem solve (both creatively and analytically), manage projects, communicate (both orally and in writing) for senior leadership

 Deep analytical skills

 Fast learner and quick thinker

 Good business judgment

 Strong influencer and facilitator, able to build strong working relationships across a variety of levels, functions and geographies

 Mature, and able to interact confidently with very senior colleagues

 Good grasp of the fundamentals of corporate finance


The following qualifications would be significant assets:

 Previous work experience within a large pharmaceutical company within R&D or Commercial or Licensing/Due diligence

 Fluency in French is a plus but not required

 Has worked outside his/her home country
