The Indian Health Service (IHS) is the principal federal health care provider and health advocate for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN). The IHS goal is to raise Indian health status to the highest possible level. IHS provides leadership and direction to programs and activities designed to improve health outcomes to over 1.9 million AI/AN through a system of IHS, Tribal, and Urban operated facilities and programs.

- Makes clinical and radiographic examinations of the oral and soft tissues and a diagnosis of pathological or irregular conditions
- Administers local anesthesia and/or nitrous oxide analgesia
- Performs routine and moderately complicated tooth extractions, including surgical procedures
- Studies results of examination to determine type of service required and develops an acceptable treatment plan.
- Performs endodontic, prosthodontics, periodontic, pedodontic, surgical and routine restorative procedures
- Recognizes symptoms of an assortment of systemic diseased and referring cases for medical diagnosis
- Occasional Travel
- Travel may be required for training and/or other work related duties.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Education: Degree in dental surgery (D.D.S.) or dental medicine (D.M.D.) from a school approved by the Council on Dental Education, American Dental Association (ADA); or other dental school, provided the education and knowledge acquired was substantially equivalent to that of graduates from an ADA-approved school. Licensure: Applicants must be currently licensed to practice dentistry in a State, the District of Columbia, or Puerto Rico. MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must be able to distinguish shades of color. Transcript(s) must be submitted at time of application. Applications received without transcripts will result in a rating of not qualified. Transcripts must indicate conferral (completion) of degree to include major field, degree awards, and date degree awarded. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable as long as they meet the criteria above. Failure to submit will result in a rating of not qualified.
