Department Description

Energy Services is responsible for the provision and operation of utilities (electricity, steam, chilled water, water, stormwater and wastewater) serving the University community exceeding 30,000 individuals, made up of students, faculty and staff employees. Energy Services performs an array of services including, but not limited to the following: production of steam, chilled water and electricity, maintenance of all associated production systems and distribution systems and construction planning and estimating. Energy Services consists of five (5) groups: (1) Cogeneration Systems (generation of electricity and steam and the distribution of steam throughout the entire campus and UNC Hospitals); (2) Electric Distribution Systems (distribution of electrical power throughout the campus); (3) Chilled Water Systems (producing and distributing chilled water throughout campus); (4) Water, Wastewater and Stormwater Systems (for the use and conservation of water as well as the proper management of stormwater and runoff); and (5) Administration (supports the financial, facility and human resources functions for the department).

Electric Distribution Systems’ primary purpose is the distribution of electricity to the various buildings on the University campus and to the UNC Hospitals. This is accomplished through a complex system of 12kV underground circuits in duct banks run all over campus, which is controlled and protected by a modern relay and control system.

Position Description

This position requires an understanding of the principles of protection of industrial or utility electrical systems of 12kV or higher. It will serve as backup to the Planning and Operations Engineers within the Electric Distribution Group in Energy Services and work closely to stay up-to-date on the systems and methods used for this work. This position will focus on the SCADA system, as well as overall system planning and protective relays. This will require a working knowledge of control systems, electrical power and automation devices.

Position requires strong leadership skills, ability to communicate with a diverse group of people, develop and execute formal presentations, as well as, facilitate decision making among groups both inside and outside Electric Distribution Systems and Energy Services. Additionally, the position will manage projects and/or write work orders related to this work. This is accomplished through a work management system, Adobe Acrobat Professional or some other graphics software. This position is an Emergency Duty position. As such, it is required to report to work during periods of adverse weather or other University emergency. The position is considered critical to the safe and continued operation of the University.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in the engineering discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience Some positions may require licensure by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Preferred Qualifications

Familiarity with Schweitzer Electric Relays NC Engineering License or Engineering Intern Certification/Status.

Special Physical and Mental Requirements

The environmental conditions vary tremendously from air conditioning and heat to dusty, hot, humid and cold conditions. This position will be required to work in all conditions for various lengths of time depending on the operational requirements. This position will be required to enter confined spaces or hazardous environments with the appropriate PPE in accordance with established procedures. Examples: climb ladders/stairs, ability to move 50+ pounds, etc.
