The selectee serves as a Psychiatrist and provides psychiatric care services for the Mental Healthcare Line (MHCL) at the Department of Veterans Affairs, Tennessee Valley Healthcare System (VA TVHS).

The duties of the Physician (Psychiatrist) position include:

  • Provide direct psychiatric care to patients. Direct care may include care by video phone or via Telemental Health methods.

  • Provide psychiatric consultation services, both within and external to the service line.

  • Provide psychiatric care consistent with policies including those regarding recovery and suicide prevention.

  • Provide treatment planning and consultation with interdisciplinary teams.

  • Educate staff, residents, physicians, and other disciplines, by direct supervision, didactic or other teaching methods.

  • Participate in the system-wide call coverage system.

  • Participate in peer review, committees and other quality management duties.

  • Participate and keep up to date on assigned VA education programs, and maintain continuing medical education.

  • Perform other duties as assigned and consistent with the credentials of a board certified psychiatrist.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am - 4:30pm. Position will require rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays, unusual tour of duty.

Basic Requirements:

  • Citizenship of the United States. Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with Department of Veterans Affairs policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Preferred Experience: The ideal candidate will possess Residency in Psychiatry experience.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
