The Psychiatry Residency Program Director will report to the Associate Chief of Staff for Education and Research. The Program Director will hold authority and accountability for the operation of the sponsoring institution's Psychiatry Residency Program which is primarily based at the Chillicothe VA Medical Center. The Residency Program Director will prepare and outline program educational goals and specific knowledge, skills, and other expectations of residents at each level of training and for each major program assignment. The Program Director will administer, organize, and maintain an educational environment conducive to educating residents in each Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) competency areas. Protected time will encompass 0.7 FTE for Residency Program Director duties. Clinical and/or research duties will encompass 0.3 FTE of duties for this position.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Provide overall strategic direction for the program that aligns with the sponsoring institution’s and Chillicothe VA Medical Center long-term goals and strategies.

  • Assist with and oversee the quality of academic and clinical education in all program sites.

  • Attend required sponsoring institution meetings, and regularly engage with the Program Coordinator.

  • Ensure compliance with grievance and due process procedures for all residents.

  • Serve as the first line of responsibility for oversight of difficulty or disagreement between residents and/faculty.

  • Maintain staff appointment and psychiatric privileges at sponsoring institution and Chillicothe VA Medical Center.

  • Ensure resident compliance with ACGME surveys.

  • Develop corrective action or correction of areas of non-compliance.

  • Disseminate policy and procedure to residents and faculty.

  • Establish and maintain an environment of inquiry and scholarship with active research components for residents and faculty.

  • Monitor duty hours and comply with ACGME requirements, adjusting schedules to mitigate excessive service demands and/or fatigue.

  • Serve as an academic program leader to promote a culture of ethics and professionalism, lifelong learning, research, patient safety, quality, and responsiveness to patient needs.

  • Monitor resident supervision at all participating institutions (including out-rotations).

  • Oversee the delegation of patient care based on needs of the patient and resident skill level.

  • Assist with and oversee clinical components for the ACGME transition process.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 1st Shift 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, Occasional evenings and weekends may apply. Travel to Dayton, OH is required 1-2 times a month. Some travel to CBOC locations may be required.

  • U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Proficiency. Must be proficient in both written and spoken English.
  • Education. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:

  • Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association of American Medical Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted.

  • Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.

  • Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e. Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure.

  • Licensure and Registration. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or the District of Columbia. The physician must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement of continuing, active, current licensure

  • Certification. Must be Board Certified or Board Eligible in Psychiatry.
  • Physical Standards. Must pass pre-employment/pre-placement medical examination.

Preferred Experience:Applicant must meet all American Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requirements for the Psychiatry Residency Program Director.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Grade Determinations:In addition to the Basic Requirements, applicants must also meet grade requirements to qualify for this vacancy. This vacancy will be performing duties at the Senior and/or Chief Grade.

Associate Grade. Meet Basic Requirements and qualify to perform general duties under supervision.

Full Grade. Meet requirements for Associate Grade, and have completed additional training such as a second year of accredited residency, and/or experience to qualify for performance of general duties without supervision.

Intermediate Grade. Meet requirements for Full Grade and completed additional training such as an accredited residency in an area not directly related to the specialist area, and/or experience to qualify for performance of general duties and some specialized functions and procedures without supervision.

Senior Grade. Have demonstrated recognized professional attainment such as:

1)Past or present faculty appointment in an approved medical school,* or*

2) Completed an accredited residency in the specialty area of Psychiatry, (preferred) or

3) Current eligibility to sit for the board certification examination in the specialist area of Psychiatry, or

4) Have comparable achievements in clinical, educational, administrative or research activities.

Chief Grade. Meet the requirements for Senior Grade plus have attained additional recognition in clinical, administrative or research areas. Such recognition may be demonstrated by:

1) Certification by an American Specialty Board, (preferred) or

2) Significant accomplishments in clinical practice, educational activities, research or administration which clearly distinguishes the physician as having the highest professional qualifications in the specialist area, such as: (a) Past or present faculty appointment at a professional level in an accredited medical school, or (b) Completion of an accredited residency in the primary specialty area of psychiatry or in a related area to which assigned and unusual professional attainment such as:

1) Publication of articles in nationally recognized professional journals, or

2) Officer in a State or National professional medical organization, or

3) Directorship of a hospital or large clinic.
