The Indian Health Service (IHS) is the principal federal health care provider and health advocate for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN). The IHS goal is to raise Indian health status to the highest possible level. IHS provides leadership and direction to programs and activities designed to improve health outcomes to over 1.9 million AI/AN through a system of IHS, Tribal, and Urban operated facilities and programs.

The position of Public Health Nutritionist reports to a Supervisory Public Health Nutritionist or a Community Health Director within the Division of Public Health in Hospitals and/or Clinics on the Navajo Reservation--Chinle PHS Hospital and Pinon and Tsaile Health Clinics in Arizona and Crownpoint, Gallup and Shiprock PHS Hospitals in New Mexico. Positions help plan, coordinate, implement and evaluate community-based nutrition care, education and promotion of services; assists with the provision of services and the development and implementation of innovative programs through collaboration with dietary services, health promotion, public health Nursing, clinical diabetes and other departments and programs in order to meet the needs of the Service Unit and the community for which it serves.
- Assess community nutrition needs; evaluates nutrition services in the Service Unit and reservation communities
- Recommends policies, procedures and program
- Establishes long and short-range objectives, sets priorities, plans methods and evaluates progress
- Participates in the development of Health Promotion/Disease Prevention programs
- Provides technical consultation to professional and allied health staff of Indian Health Service, Tribal and community, schools and institutional settings
- Works with other health care professionals in the development of appropriate, culturally specific nutrition education materials
- Cooperates with personnel of other health agencies and groups serving the Indian population to coordinate Service Unit nutrition activities and programs
- Prepares special and periodic reports and performs other duties as assigned

To qualify for this position, your resume must reflect sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the position for which you are applying. Degree in dietetics, food, nutrition, food service management, institution management, or related science. The curriculum must have been in accordance with the qualifying requirements established by the American Dietetic Association (ADA) in effect at the time of graduation. Professional registration as a registered nutritionist/dietitian (R.D.) is evidence of meeting ADA requirements for a baccalaureate degree, is qualifying at grade GS-7 for nutritionists. In addition to meeting the basic entry qualification requirements, applicants must have specialized experience and/or directly related education in the amounts shown:
GS 9: 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or masters or equivalent graduate degree; or 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS 7.
GS 11: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree; or 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-9
Substitution of Education for Experience: Graduate education may be substituted for experience for the GS-9 in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standards for General Schedule positions.
Registration: Each PHS dietitian/nutritionist must possess and maintain a current registration with the Commission on Dietetic. Applicants must submit a copy of their current registration with application.
In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below-
Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following types of tasks: This is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the Public Health Nutritionist position and that is typically in or related to the work of the Public Health Nutritionist position. Examples of creditable experience are: experience as a nutritionist emphasizing the social, economic, cultural and psychological implications of food usually associated with public health care services or with food assistance and research activities. The work includes directing, promoting, and evaluating nutritional components of programs and projects; developing standards, guides, educational and informational material for use in Federally funded and operated nutrition programs; participating in research activities involving applied or basic research; or providing training and consultation in nutrition.
