The Cincinnati Veterans Affairs Medical Center is currently looking for One (1) Registered Nurse-Nursing Officer of the Day (NOD) for the Cincinnati location. The NOD is directly accountable to the Chief Nurse, Surgical Services.

Duties for this position include but are not limited to:
- Accountable for the overall administration of Nursing Services in the absence of the Nurse Managers and the Chief Nurses during non-administrative tours of duty
- Using appropriate consultation, is responsible for exercising prerogatives in administrative and clinical matters
- Responsible for facilitating the appropriate use of resources on assigned shifts and manages the patient flow by facilitating timely admission, discharges and processes on the units
- Screens the patients for admission determining the appropriate level of care
- Guides the charge nurses in their decision-making and assignment of personnel, by coordinating staffing needs house wide, and by obtaining and ensuring the appropriate use of equipment and supplies
- Is a pivotal role in disaster/emergency management
- Collaborates with the M.A.A. in making decisions regarding on-going patient care and actions to be taken during emergency situations and disasters
- Assists the nurse managers by contributing to staff evaluations and staff educational development for the off tours
- Additional responsibility includes identified performance measures, customer satisfaction, and special mandates specific to leadership roles as appropriate
- Incumbent participates in studying, identifying, evaluating and implementing creative process and system improvements that facilitate the Mission of the Medical Center at the program or service level and which can be documented through demonstrated outcomes
- Demonstrates understanding of patient rights, policies relating to patient rights (i.e. Advanced Directives, DNR, patient confidentiality) and understanding of ethics for the Federal employee
- Stands-in for SPD on the off shifts in procuring equipment and supplies necessary for patient care
- Responsible for demonstrating and maintaining full competency in the use, pre-cleaning and/or reprocessing of reusable medical equipment
- Employee must ensure that the appropriate Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and manufacturers instructions are followed for any step in the use of RME (pre-cleaning, reprocessing, disinfection, sterilization, maintenance) in which he/she is involved
- Is an ECF participant and must meet the performance requirements detailed in that document including performance measures and the HPDM elements of performance in addition to the nursing professional qualification standards
- Core elements of performance include knowledge and active participation in unit/program level quality improvement processes and initiatives as well as the customer service program
- As well as other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Must be able to work rotating tours, nights, weekends, and holidays.

- Full unrestricted Licensure, Certification, or Registration required
- Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
- The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
- Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
*Grade Determinations: *
The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
- Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
- Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
- Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
- Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
- Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience.

NOTE: Applicant's education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and step of the applicant selected.
- Critical care experience is preferred
- Previous supervisory experience is preferred
- BSN is preferred, but an MSN is highly preferred
- Previous years of clinical experience in an acute care setting

Physical Requirements:The population of male and female veterans served ranges from the adult, age 18, to the elderly adult, age 65 and over. The VA Medical Center is a major interdisciplinary teaching facility, serving medical, surgical, and neurological inpatients and outpatients. There is a large outpatient psychiatric population, with admissions for medical co-morbidities. This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs.
