This position is part of the San Francisco VA Health Care System, within the Rehabilitation Service/Audiology Section, and is located in Clearlake, CA. In this position you serve as a Health Technician in the Audiology Clinic combining direct patient care activities with telehealth and support functions for the Audiology staff where the support functions are characterized by both clinical and administrative duties. Major duties include but are not limited to:

  • Assists Audiology Staff with and/or perform diagnostic or treatment and aftercare procedures;

  • Performs and/or support direct patient care including conducting hearing and tympanometric screening (without interpretation);

  • Sets up equipment, determine technical factors, and set controls;

  • Provides clerical/administrative support, and coordination requirements.

Work Schedule: Full Time, Monday - Friday 8:00am - 4:30pm

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITON: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test results is received.

To qualify for this position you must meet the following requirement:

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.



Possess one (1) full year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of this position successfully that is equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service. Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. Specialized experience also includes: assist during procedures by monitoring patient's condition, make appropriate adjustments, set up all necessary accessories, equipment or supplies, provide appropriate methods and levels of disinfection for equipment, maintain clinical tools to include those used for hearing aid troubleshooting, electro-acoustic assessment devices, otoscope and ear impression materials; ensure proper cleaning, perform minor maintenance and adjustments to hearing aids and testing equipment; repair, modify and program hearing aids; proficiency in the use of decentralized hospital computer system and Microsoft Office programs; enter orders into computer system for hearing aids repairs, track orders, maintain records; use interviewing techniques to perform adequate screening of patients prior to audiology care.



You must possess successfully completed one (1) full year of graduate education to meet the requirements for this position. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement.* (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)*

You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:

  • Knowledge of infection control processes and universal precautions to provide appropriate levels of disinfection for equipment.

  • Skill in the repair, modification and programming of hearing aids.

  • Ability to carry out and resolve recurring problems.

  • Skill using a variety of computer programs.

  • Ability to communicate with patients who have complex communication and/or medical problems.


The work is generally sedentary, and requires standing and walking for prolonged periods of time. There is occasional moving equipment.
