Job Overview:As the Gift Planning Officer position you will develop a multi-year strategy to secure additional estate planning decisions (filling the “pipeline”) to donate to Focus on the Family through estates. The second key area is to acquire, market, administer, and to dispose of current estate and non-cash gifts received by the ministry. These activities involve extensive contact both with donors who desire to give to Focus on the Family and with allied professionals who are involved with the transference, administration, and the disposition of these gifts.

Day-to-Day Tasks:

  • ­Assists with the marketing of, and is directly responsible for the acquisition, administration, and disposition of the following types of gifts:

Non-cash gifts:

  • This includes gifts of securities, tangible personal property, real estate, gifts in kind, and ordinary income assets, such as artwork, automobiles, collectibles, etc.
  • Studies and is able to explain, in general terms, the tax implications of making such gifts
  • Oversees the transfer, disposition, and/or ultimate sale of these gifts

Gift Annuities:

  • Oversees internal system for acquisition including proposals, applications, contracts, receipts, and appropriate correspondence
  • Monitors investments and investment performance of gift annuity reserve account
  • Oversees compliance with Focus' existing policy and develops and proposes new policy as needed
  • Administers the maturation of gift annuity contracts
  • Works with allied legal professionals to ensure compliance of the various Federal and state regulations

Gifts of Life Insurance:

  • Oversees dealings with various professional advisors to timely and accurately transfer and sell per Focus' policy
  • Follows up and communicates appreciation and a desire to serve

Gifts through Bequests, Wills, Retirement & Estate Plans:

  • Oversees acquisition and administration
  • Carries out compliance within guidelines of Focus' policy
  • Communicates with attorneys, trustees, and executors to complete transfers
  • Ensures that the desires of the donors are met through the process
  • Develops and maintains a "matured bequest" program
  • Develops and maintains familiarity with substantiation rules regarding all forms of outright and deferred gifts
  • Develops and maintains familiarity with issues of taxation, and valuation of outright and deferred gifts
  • Responds to initial contact by donor; gives direction and responds to inquiries involving matters of stewardship & estate planning from both technical and spiritual perspective

  • Estate & Bequest Administration:

  • Serves as primary designated agent to make, execute, disclaim, or deliver claims for payment involving all estate planning & deferred giving instruments for which Focus is entitled to receive benefit
  • Develops and maintains testamentary tracking system, monitoring all matured estates
  • Oversees reconciliation of received distributions against estate documents
  • Procures and reviews all required estate documents to ensure that due diligence and matters of compliance are satisfied
  • Communicates with surviving family members on behalf of Focus to express appropriate condolences and / or appreciation * *

Required Experience

Key Qualifications:

  • Enjoys working with complex situations and assisting in solving problems
  • Enjoys working with people - this position will deal intensely with donors and various allied professionals
  • Excellent conversational/human relations/phone skills
  • Attitude of service to Focus donors
  • Accuracy and an eye for detail extremely important

Experience Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Accounting, or related field
  • 5-7 years of experience in fund raising with at least 2 years in planned giving
  • Administrative experience developing and maintaining a database
