JOB SUMMARY: The Roman Catholic chaplain has full responsibility for providing a complete religious ministry to Veteran patients and their families, and to meet each patient's individually expressed desires and needs. Such ministry will encompass individual pastoral ministry. The chaplain will address religious, spiritual, moral, and ethical problems of patients, if any, and will provide appropriate ministration to the newly admitted, pre- and post-operative Veteran patients, the critically ill and the families concerned.

Work Schedule: As needed and will be determined by Supervisor of Chaplain Service.

Duties include:

  • Providing well-rounded religious ministry for Veteran patients, participates in the total health care program of the medical center with other professional and para-professional staff, and interprets the purpose and mission of the medical center to the religious and civic communities.
  • Providing counsel and pastoral support to immediate relatives of Veteran patients in difficult and trying situations to alleviate their anxieties, to win effective cooperation of these relatives with the treatment regimen of the medical center, and to help them deal with grief.
  • Providing Veteran patients and personnel with guidance in the selection of religious literature and other resources to illumine and interpret the problems of persons in difficulty.
  • Determining the need for and provide regular and special worship services, at times and locations such that all Veteran patients who desire to attend will have access.
  • Performing sacraments and/or rituals as leading Mass and observances specific to meet the unique needs of Veteran patients of the Catholic faith group.
  • Providing the full range of ministry, sacraments, worship services etc. for Roman Catholic Veteran patients and when Veteran patients of other faith groups or denomination have needs he cannot meet, he will locate other staff chaplains or clergy persons from the community to meet them.
  • Assuring that the right of each and every Veteran patient to free exercise of religion is upheld; and that Veteran patients are protected from proselytizing by staff, other Veteran patients, or visitors, regardless of faith group when appropriate within the therapeutic milieu.
  • Cooperating closely with colleagues and the supervisory chaplain in an ecumenical/interfaith, team approach to assignments. Demonstrating sensitivity to the religious needs and desires of each other and each individual patient.
  • Initiating action to obtain ecclesiastical equipment and supplies.
  • Supervising volunteers assigned to the pastoral care program.
  • Procuring and distributing appropriate religious literature, reviews unsolicited religious literature for appropriateness.
  • Communicating effectively with persons of diverse races, cultures, religions, nationalities, ages, and persons having varying types and degrees of disability, in order to understand and address their specific needs.
  • Maintaining written and/or electronic records of the ministry provided.

To be considered for this position applicants must meet all of the following requirements: Ecclesiastical Endorsement: An ecclesiastical endorsement, dated within 12 months prior to the closing date of the announcement, from the Roman Catholic Archdiocese for the Military Services USA. An ecclesiastical endorsement is the written official statement by the endorsing body certifying that you are in good standing with the faith group or denomination and that you, in the opinion of the endorsing body, are qualified to provide the full range of ministry required in the VA's pluralistic setting.

Education: A Master of Divinity from an institution accredited by an accrediting organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, or the equivalent. Equivalent education is a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution plus at least 70 graduate semester hours which included all of the following: at least 20 semester hours in pastoral ministry; 20 semester hours in any combination of theology, ethics, and philosophy of religion; 20 semester hours in the study of sacred writings, including the study of languages in which sacred writings are written; and 10 semester hours in religious history and/or world religions. Clinical Pastoral Education: In addition to the education requirement, applicants must have completed at least 2 units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) [as defined by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE). 800 hours of supervised ministry in a formal training program which incorporated both ministry formation and pastoral care skills development will be considered for equivalency to the required CPE. Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work can help build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. At least two years of ministry experience is required. At least one year of this experience must have followed completion of the Master of Divinity or equivalent education. Experience during graduate education may count for up to one year of the two years of required experience.

Clinical Pastoral Education in excess of two units counts toward the experience requirement.

You must show proof that the education credentials have been submitted to a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign educational credentials and that such education has been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education programs; or an accredited U.S. state university reports the other institution as one whose transcript is given full value, or full value is given in subject areas applicable to the curricula at the state university. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.
