HCA, Hospital Corporation of America Billing, Coding, & Compliance Supervisor - Urgent Care in Coppell, Texas


This position is a management level position designed to oversee all billing, coding, and medical records responsibilities. The supervisor will function as a continuous trainer for the department and ensures compliancy is maintained in the AR department. Ability to manage people, confront problem issues, and work toward quick resolution. Recognize potential problems in production and staffing and plan for future growth. Support and empower team to meet and exceed departmental and company goals. Applies the knowledge of health information practices and principles to day-to-day operations of the Accounts Receivable Department and clinics.


  • Oversee all functions of the billing and medical record’s department

  • Oversee compliancy in all areas of the AR department

  • Ensures knowledge of multiple classification systems (ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS) is applied and compliance is monitored o Understand disease processes, anatomy and physiology, and medical terminology in order to assign accurate codes

    o Understand the correlation between the diagnosis, lab testing, radiology, procedures, treatments, and other pertinent information contained in the patient record

    o Review patient medical record and utilize clinical and coding knowledge to determine why a claim is denied and take appropriate actions for record/claim corrections

    o Perform audits on patient records to determine appropriate guidelines and coding conventions are being applied and appropriate documentation exists within the chart to meet medical necessity

    o Utilize education opportunities to keep up to date on coding requirements and regulations that impact the classification systems and act as a coding resource for team members

    o Preserve the integrity of the coding structure as set forth in CMS, AHIMA, AAPC, AMA CPT Assistant, AHA Coding Clinics, and Coding Guidelines and Conventions

  • Oversee the management of heath care data o Protect the security of medical records to ensure that confidentiality is maintained

    o Review records for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with regulations

    o Release information to persons or agencies according to regulations

    o Communicate with physicians and clinic staff regarding necessary patient information

    o Assist in maintaining the daily operations of the Medical Records Department

  • Assist with development, implementation, and maintenance of the ICD-10 Project o Work alongside levels and management and team members to develop and implement the ICD-10 process

    o Identify resources and scheduling needs to meet the project objectives

    o Assist with coordinating the activities of the team

    o Openly communicate with team members on new developments and status of ongoing projects

    o Develop in-house education materials to train physicians and staff members

    o Utilize educational and industry resources to keep team members up to date regarding requirements and regulations that may impact the ICD-10 transition

  • Create and maintain the physician fee schedule (PFS) applying Medicare RBRVS o Analyze data provided by CMS to apply the RVU, GPCI, and CF values to create current year fee schedule

    o Create managed care fee schedule based on contracted rates

    o Create workers’ compensation fee schedule using information provided by CMS and TDI-DWC

    o Update fee schedules annually, quarterly, or daily as necessary to maintain accuracy.

    o Communicate with Posting Department on payment discrepancies

    o Audit payment batches to ensure payers are paying according to managed care contract rate

    o Provide CPT pricing based on RBRVS or payer fee schedule for all codes requested by staff

  • Communicate effectively in oral and written formats; inspect, read, and analyze written material o Create newsletters, memos, and act as a scribe in departmental meetings to ensure information is provided to all members of the department

    o Keep up-to-date on industry news and inform team members when necessary

    o Keep up to date with insurance networks and communicate findings

    o Provide input as requested regarding workflow and development of new processes effecting the department

    o Provide the highest level of customer service to patients, fellow employees and physicians

    o Assist the AR Director with related duties and projects as assigned

    o Ensures the Mission Statement and CareNow Excellence Strategy is carried out at all times in the department

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES REQUIRED: * High School Diploma or equivalent

  • Professional certification (RHIT, CCS, CCS-P, CCA,CPC, COC, CPC-A, COC-A) or associate’s degree or higher in health information program

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in HIM environment

  • Minimum 2 years supervisor experience

  • Knowledge of Medicare RBRVS

  • EMR/Practice Management Software

  • Knowledge of and adherence to HIPAA regulations and guidelines

  • Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point proficient

  • Laser Fiche

  • Knowledge of HCFA 1500 billing forms

  • Full understanding of denial management processes and prevention methods

  • Understanding of managed care terminology and practices like PPO discounts

  • Excellent verbal communication skills, organizational skills, creative thinking, and the ability to grasp basic computer skills with patient processing software

  • Excellent written skills to conduct annual performance appraisals, prepare letters, emails, memos, presentations, and counseling documentation

  • Ability to manage people, counsel problem employees, and employee’s work performance in a professional manner
