The Indian Health Service (IHS) is the principal federal health care provider and health advocate for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN). The IHS goal is to raise Indian health status to the highest possible level. IHS provides leadership and direction to programs and activities designed to improve health outcomes to over 1.9 million AI/AN through a system of IHS, Tribal, and Urban operated facilities and programs.

This position is located within the Indian Health Service, Crow/Northern Cheyenne Service Unit, Crow Agency MT.
Provide diagnostic services through use of history, radiographs, clinical examination, diagnostic models and other appropriate tests. Provide care for a full range of oral surgery cases, problems in the specialty of oral surgery. Provide emergency services, including treatment of trauma, pain and infection. Provide inpatient oral surgery services in an operating room setting.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Education: Degree in dental surgery (D.D.S.) or dental medicine (D.M.D.) from a school approved by the Council on Dental Education, American Dental Association (ADA); or other dental school, provided the education and knowledge acquired was substantially equivalent to that of graduates from an ADA-approved school. Licensure: Applicants must be currently licensed to practice dentistry in a State, the District of Columbia, or Puerto Rico. Applicants who meet the basic requirements qualify for GS-11. Additional Requirements for Grades GS-12 and Above: For purposes of this standard, the following terms are defined. Approved internship; approved residency-Training in a hospital dental internship or residency approved by the Council on Dental Education of the American Dental Association. Graduate-level study -- Either dental graduate study leading to an advanced degree such as Master of Science, or postgraduate (nondegree) dental school study involving a level of instruction comparable to that provided in a graduated degree program. National certifying board -- An examining board in a special area of dental practice recognized by the Council on Dental Education of the American Dental Association. Board eligibility -- Qualification for examination by a national certifying board as a result of having met the advanced training program requirements for a dental specialty. Experience and/or training must be one of the following types: Post-licensure professional experience in the general practice of dentistry. Approved internship training. Approved residency training. Graduate-level study in an accredited dental school. Post-licensure professional experience in a specialized area of practice. Other advanced study or training (outside a dental school or hospital) creditable towards satisfaction of training program requirements for Board eligibility. For specialist positions, experience and/or training must clearly establish the applicant's status as a specialist Agencies should review the applicant's experience to determine the types and difficulty of the cases dealt with, the level of knowledge and understanding of the specialization regularly required, the degree of diagnostic skills and treatment planning ability involved, and the pertinent graduate study acquired. For GS-14: One year of professional dentistry experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 grade level. For specialist positions, certification as a diplomate by a national certifying board for a specialized area of practice meets the requirements. Medical Requirements Applicants must be able to distinguish shades of color. In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below- MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: To qualify based on specialized experience for GS-14 level, you must have one year of experience (equivalent to the GS-13 level) that included duties such as: Provide diagnostic services through the use of history, radiographs, clinical examination, diagnostic models, and other appropriate tests, and is recognized as the professional expert in the specialty of oral surgery. Provide care for a full range of oral surgery cases, and problems in the specialty of oral surgery, including the most difficult greater-than-usual dental health problems that require complex treatment, including the following: Removal of unerupted and impacted teeth, residual root tips, and teeth with ankylosed roots. Removal of localized foreign bodies from gingival tissues, aveolar sockets, and facial structures. Acute cases of cellulitis. Diseases of the salivary glands and their ducts. Cleft lip and cleft palate surgery. Open and closed reduction of the jaws and facial bones. Surgery where there is severe laceration of face, lips, or bones of the face. Removal of cancerous tissue or other destructive growth lying wholly within the oral region. Surgery done in connection with reconstruction of jaw and face Provide oral surgery treatment in and operating room setting. Perform restoration of simple and compound cavities with standard and prescribed material (cement, amalgam composite, etc.)Participate in the planning and is responsible for the coordination, implementation, and evaluation of the oral surgery program appropriate to the clinical and prevention needs of the Dental Program. Provide technical guidance for service unit dentists in the provision of oral surgery programs. Periodic travel to the Service Unit dental clinics may be necessary to accomplish this duty. Provide continuing dental education for the dental staff to enable them to implement oral surgery procedures that are within the scope and capabilities of general practice dentists and their staff. Participate in the development and implementation of continuing education courses for the IHS Dental Program. Provide instruction and training both didactic and clinical in all aspects of oral surgery to rotating dental students. Provide services in cases of patient behavior and patient management problems.
