Job Overview

The Indian Health Service (IHS) is the principal federal health care provider and health advocate for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN). The IHS goal is to raise Indian health status to the highest possible level. IHS provides leadership and direction to programs and activities designed to improve health outcomes to over 1.9 million AI/AN through a system of IHS, Tribal, and Urban operated facilities and programs.

The primary purpose/role of the position is to provide full range comprehensive and continuing health and medical care services to patients and families at the Crownpoint Healthcare Facility, satellite health centers. This position is located at the Crownpoint Healthcare Facility, Crownpoint, New Mexico. Serves as a Nurse Practitioner providing medical and health care for ambulatory care patients, emergency cases, and individuals and families of all ages. This position will report to the Clinical Director.

Provides direct primary diagnostic, preventive, and therapeutic health services to patients and family members with the ability to function as an independent practitioner.

  • Performs or requests special screening and developmental tests and diagnostic tests and procedure and interprets results.
  • Makes decisions concerning medical care needs of patients which may involve various treatment mortalities, prescribed medications, consultation and referral when appropriate. To provide direct patient care for primary, preventive and therapeutic medical and nursing care to patients of all ages.
  • Orders and/or performs screening and diagnostic tests and procedures such as lab studies, x-rays, electrocardiagrams, audiograms and pulmonary function tests.
  • Formulates and consultation of other healthcare providers.
  • Works collaboratively with physician in management of selected complex medical problems. Evaluates the medical aspects of treatment plans, and total health care needs of patients.
  • Provides full range of emergency services or crisis intervention including life saving emergency procedures
  • Evaluates the medical aspects of treat plans.
  • Provides complete records of all clinical, community, and administrative work. Maintains knowledge and proficiency in medical practices.

  • Relocation expenses are authorized and will be paid. You will be required to sign a one year service agreement. Failure to fulfill the one year service agreement may result in repayment of relocation expenses.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS: EDUCATION - Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.

PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL NURSE POSITIONS: Applicants must have certification issued by the appropriate certifying body (such as the American College of Nursing Association) as a Nurse Practitioner.

In Addition to the Basic Requirements:

GS-09: Two (2) full years of progressively higher level graduate education OR a master's OR one (1) year of experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 grade level. OR

GS-11: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level OR completion of all requirements for a doctoral degree (Ph.D or equivalent) OR 3 full years of progressively higher level grade education.

GS-12: One (1) year of specialized experience to at least the GS-11 grade level.

Specialized experience: Experience which equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.

*Specialized experience is work directly related to the work that is being performed as mid-level provider. *

The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements. If privileges are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service.
