The Atlanta VAMC has 405 authorized inpatient beds (273 hospital, 120 Community Living Center and 12 PRRTP) and is a tertiary care facility classified as a Complexity Level 1A facility. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services complete with state-of-the-art technology, education and research. Comprehensive health care is provided through emergency medicine, primary care, tertiary care, and long-term care in the areas of medicine, surgery, mental health, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics, and extended care. The Atlanta VAMC is part of the VA Southeast Network (VISN 7), which includes facilities in Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina. The Atlanta VAMC Community Living Center serves metro Atlanta and includes extended care rehabilitation, psycho-geriatric care, and general long term care. The facility also serves as a prosthetics treatment center, fabricating and supplying mechanical devices such as artificial limbs for patients within the states of Georgia, South Carolina and Alabama.

A Hospitalist/Nocturnist in the Section of VA Hospital Medicine [VA HM] is able to practice all types of inpatient medicine, including acute inpatient patient care with and without medicine resident trainees, trainee and student education and supervision, scholarly activity consistent with academic promotion, and quality improvement projects.

Overall responsibilities can be divided across :

Clinical Inpatient Care in a Direct Care role [Daytime Direct Care, Consultative Medicine, Nocturnist Direct Care]

Clinical Inpatient Care in a Supervisory Care Role [Academic Team Attending]

Educational Activities (e.g. participation in School of Medicine and residency courses as a lecturer and small group leader; precepting daily case conferences)

Quality Improvement Work (e.g. Quality Improvement and Committee activities; mentoring students and house staff)

Scholarly Work (e.g. Educational and QI research, writing, publishing, and speaking)

Specific VA HM responsibilities:

Day-to-day clinical activities as above

Participates in Quality Improvement and Systems Redesign projects

Educational activities of residents and students assigned to the VA Medical Service

Provides continuing educational activities to the nursing staff and peers.

Attends all administrative meetings of the Medical Service.

Completes twice-yearly HM peer review and Professional Practice Evaluation activities

Attends noon lectures

Attends twice monthly Section meetings

Attends Emory Division of Hospital Medicine [EDHM] activities and School of Medicine [SOM] activities

Other tasks as delegated by the Section Chief, Hospital Medicine or Chief, Medical Service

Following are the overall requirements for appointment as a physician in VHA.

a. Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.)

b. Education. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:

(1) Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association of American Medical Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted.

(2) Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.

(3) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure.

(4) For residents, graduation from an approved medical school as described above is required except as provided in M-8, part II, chapter 1.

c. Licensure and Registration

(1) Physicians (Except Residents). Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. The physician must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure. The facility Director may waive this licensure requirement if the physician is to serve in a country other than the United States and the physician has licensure in that country.

(2) Residents. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia before the second year of VA residency, or meet any licensure, registration or other equivalent requirements established for residents of non-VA hospitals with which the VA facility is affiliated for training purposes. The resident must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.

(3) Impaired Licensure. A physician who has, or has ever had, any license(s) revoked, suspended, denied, restricted, limited, or issued/placed in a probationary status may be appointed only in accordance with the provisions of chapter 3, section B, paragraph 14 of this part.

(4) Waiver of Licensure. Licensure may be waived by the Under Secretary for Health or designee in Central Office for individuals in research or academic assignments involving no direct patient care responsibilities in accordance with current regulations.

d. First-Year Residency (Internship).Completed a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed. For a VA resident, the appropriate Deans Committee and Resident Review Board may recommend appointment on the basis of the candidate's acceptability for residency training. Approved residencies are:

(1) Those approved by the Council on Medical Education and Hospitals, American Medical Association, in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or

(2) Other residencies or their equivalents which the Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. The Board may determine that the residency requirement has been met if the candidate has completed 1 year of postgraduate education.

e. Physical Standards. Applicants must meet physical standards for the position. A physical examination prior to placement is required. This is a designated drug testing position. After appointment, you will be subject to random testing for illegal drug use. Requires lifting 15-44 pounds; pushing (approx. 2 hours); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers and both hands; walking and standing from 3-5 hours and kneeling. Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Must have depth perception and ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors. Hearing aid is permitted.

f. English Language Proficiency. Physicians, including residents, appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).

Qualify to receive an academic appointment at Emory University School of Medicine Department of Emergency Medicine and Morehouse University School of Medicine to meet residency and fellowship commission compliance.

Must be able to travel by automobile and/or airplane and must be able to drive an automobile without assistants. Must have the manual dexterity and visual acuity to be able to operate a standard computer keyboard and/or handheld device such as a blackberry or iPhone. Must be physically able to speak publically to large gatherings and must be able to hear well enough to participate in conference calls.
