VA Eastern Colorado HealthCare System (ECHCS) is complexity level 1a and provides a full range of state-of- the-art patient care services, and will soon be providing care in a new state-of-the-art hospital in Aurora, CO. ECHCS provides tertiary care and services to over 89,000 patients and is a major referral center for veterans living in Wyoming, Montana, Kansas, and New Mexico. ECHCS serves as an educational and research center, it is highly affiliated with medical and educational institutions. Health Care Services are provided at 15 different geographically dispersed locations incorporating nine Community Based Outpatient Clinics, two Primary Care Telehealth Outpatient Clinics, one local and one remote Community Living Center, Homeless Veteran's Domiciliary, a Community Referral and Resource Center, a Polytrauma and Blind Rehabilitation Center and VA presence on two DOD bases; Fort Carson and U.S. Air Force Academy covering a geographical area of over 10,000 square miles. This position is located at the Denver VAMC, Gastroenterology (GI) Lab. The GI Lab is a unit that provides both inpatient and outpatient diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. The GI Staff Nurse is responsible for the administration and monitoring of moderate sedation for patients undergoing gastroenterology procedures. The nurse plans, organizes, and when appropriate directs and supervises the activities of others to complete assignments in a safe and timely manner. The nurse demonstrates excellent communication skills and the ability to develop and maintain effective interpersonal relationships. The RN is accountable for a defined group of patients for the pre, intra, and post procedural encounter. Based on education, experience and competency, the RN may be assigned responsibilities as a charge nurse or preceptor. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Prepares procedure room and equipment based on patient needs

  • Verifies integrity of supplies and instruments

  • Performs the required time-out procedure

  • Provides moderate sedation for the patient

  • Assists the physician with biopsies or polypectomies using various pieces of equipment

  • Provides for physical comfort of the patient

  • Handles specimens correctly

  • Completes pre, intra, and post procedure care and documentation

  • Maximizes patient access through efficient patient flow

  • Performs pre and post procedure calls for optimal patient experience and outcomes

  • Adheres to quality and safety standards

  • Recognizes emergency situations and responds appropriately

Work Schedule: Generally Monday - Friday, 8 to 10 hours shifts between the hours of 6:30am - 6:30pm. Candidate must be willing to work weekends, irregular work hours, and extended hours. The candidate must be willing to be placed, detailed or temporarily assigned to other related services and/or locations if necessary.

  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. *Grade Determinations: *The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:

  • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.

  • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; ORa Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; ORa Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience.

Preferred Experience:

  • Minimum of two years of medical/surgical experience

  • BS in Nursing, highly preferred

  • Excellent IV skills.

  • Advanced endoscopy experience preferred (ERCP, EUS, Motility studies, Manometry)

  • Ability to easily establish and maintain good interpersonal relationships and communication with physicians, co-workers, Veterans and their significant others, both verbally and in writing.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform duties with initiative and independence.

  • Demonstrated ability to provide leadership in delivering and improving holistic care through collaborative strategies with others.

  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and communicate Nursing and ECHCS goals, objectives, policies and procedures to staff, patients and the health care team.
