Position Summary: The Director of Adult and Critical Care Services is responsible for planning, supporting, communicating, coordinating, and implementing the strategic planning process for Adult and Critical Care Services. Responsibilities include planning, directing and coordinating the activities of nursing and support staff to ensure quality patient care is provided in accordance with compliance standards, communicating expectations of the organization to employees and ensuring 24 hour coverage for the Medical Surgical Units, Surgical Vascular Unit, Intermediate Care Unit, and Intensive Care Unit.

Working Conditions: Occasional exposure to radiation hazard and chemicals; frequent exposure to needles/sharps and blood or body fluids. May be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases.

Physical Requirements: Must be able to see clearly 20 or more feet and to read printed material; able to read and see small items, computer screens and biomedical equipment readouts with or without corrective devices; able to read, write and communicate clearly with patients, families and coworkers. Hearing sufficient to distinguish subtle changes in auscultation of breath sounds, heart sounds, blood pressures, etc. Requires frequent /prolonged walking, sitting, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and lifting. Heavy physical effort includes the ability to lift/carry up to 25 lbs and push up to 100 pounds. Lifts, positions, pushes and transfers adult patients; lifts supplies and equipment.

Personal Protective Equipment: Use required when performing functions where you may reasonably expect to come in contact with hazardous or infectious substances. The equipment includes, but is not limited to: gloves, fluid resistant coats, face shields, fume hoods, safety glasses and chemical resistant gloves.

Performance Standards/Essential Duties include but are not limited to:

  • In collaboration with the Administrative team, participates in the strategic planning process and planning cycle, ensuring that the framework and process focus on the strategic business drivers for the facility which include growth, service, quality, people, financial, and critical community and internal relationships.

  • In collaboration with directors or leaders, ensures the alignment and integration of the facility, around the strategic business plans, including the projection of capital, operating, information technology, and human resources needs.

  • Establishes and coordinates a process for ensuring accountability and communication around progress made on strategic initiatives; facilitates support and collaboration from resources to ensure successful execution of department and facility strategic business plans.

  • In collaboration with the CNO, prepares, monitors and maintains annual capital, operating and labor budgets. Monitors department operating performance against benchmarks.

  • In collaboration with Human Resources, ensures that staff performance goals and development plans are implemented that encourage employee professional growth and development and support the strategic plans of the facility.

  • Identifies excellence in the delivery of nursing services to patients, promotes quality in a milieu that supports professional practices and provides a mechanism for the dissemination of Best Practices in nursing service.

  • Monitors, evaluates, and modifies staffing patterns in order to properly utilize nursing and support staff to provide safe care.

  • Evaluates staff responsible for the assessment, treatment and care of patients to insure competent delivery of age appropriate care; validates staff ability to obtain and interpret information related to patient needs.

  • Insures research findings are incorporated into clinical practice; designs, implements and monitors quality improvement initiatives through team participation, data collection and process implementation.

  • Remains fully familiar with regulatory standards impacting department and hospital operations and ensures compliance with standards.

    o Meets Parkland Medical Center standards related to:

    + Patient safety: reports actual or potential medical/health care errors, near misses or other opportunities to improve patient safety; participates in safety education, safety, quality and performance improvement initiatives. + Customer service/patient centered care: shows genuine concern, respect and ability to communicate cordially with patients, visitors, physicians and employees; is sensitive to customer inconveniences and responds accordingly. + Confidentiality, compliance, patient/provider rights: adheres to corporate and professional codes of conduct, Standards of Excellence, HIPPA privacy standards.

    Position Requirements:

    o Licensure/Certification/Registration: Current NH RN, BLS and ACLS required; CCRN and TNCC preferred.

    o Education: Graduate from an accredited school of nursing, Bachelor of Science in Nursing required within 3years. Masters in nursing, healthcare or business administration preferred.

    o Experience: Minimum 3-5 years progressive medical-surgical and critical care experience and at least 2-3 years management experience as a Clinical Coordinator or Nursing Administrative Supervisor.

    o ** Special qualifications: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, program development and analytic skills required.
