Sets up and operates conventional, NC and CNC machine tools to cut and shape metal work pieces to specifications.

THE MACHINIST--A sets-up all machines proficiently, programs all NC/CNC machines proficiently, determines feeds, speeds, tooling, operational sequence for a range of operations, has knowledge of shop mathematics, has full proficiency in reading blueprints and has knowledge of inspection equipment proficiently.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

• Has regular, predictable attendance

• Scheduled overtime maybe required.

• Conventional Machine Tools

• Studies blueprint or layout on work piece to visualize machining required, and plans sequence of operations. Selects method of holding work piece.

• Lifts work piece manually or using hoist, and positions and secures it to holding device such as machine table, chuck, centers, or fixture. Verifies work piece position.

• Selects feed rate, cutting speed, depth of cut, and cutting tool (bar tool, rotary cutter, or abrasive wheel) for each operation.

• Positions and secures tool in tool holder (chuck, collet, or tool post)

• Moves controls to position tool and work piece in relation to each other, and to set feeds, speeds, and depth of cut.

• Starts machine, turns hand wheel to feed tool in work piece or vice versa, and engages automatic feeding device.

• Turns valve handle to start flow of coolant against tool and work piece.

• Observes operation and regulates tool position and action.

• Verifies conformance of machined work piece to specifications.

• Measures, marks, and scribes work piece to lay out for machining.

• Devises ways of clamping work pieces and makes special jigs and fixtures as needed.


• Reviews setup sheet and specifications to determine setup procedure, machining sequence, and dimensions of finished work piece.

• Attaches fixture to machine bed and positions and secures work piece in fixture according to setup instructions.

• Assembles cutting tools in tool holders and positions tool holders in machine spindles as specified or inserts cutting tools in specified machine magazines.

• Using appropriate CNC language, programs machine or enters commands to retrieve preprogrammed machine instructions from database.

• Manipulates controls and enters commands to index cutting tool to specified set point and to start machine.

• Observes and listens to machine operation to detect malfunctions such as worn or damaged cutting tools.

• Changes cutting tools and location of work piece during machining process as specified in setup instructions.

• Measures work piece for conformance to specifications.

• Notifies supervisor or discrepancies.

• Adjusts machine feed and speed and changes cutters to machine parts according to specifications when automatic programming is faulty, tooling wears or machine malfunctions.

• Machines materials other than metal such as composites, plastic, and rubber.


May be required to fill-in for the Machine Shop Department Head. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work.
