Midwestern University Assistant Professor - Specialist - CDMI in Downers Grove, Illinois

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Full-time Faculty-Specialist performs the following functions:

  • Model and ensure professional behavior

  • Participate in the recruitment, training and calibration of faculty

  • Course coordinator for courses and/or modules in the Oral Health Sciences (OHS) curriculum of the DMD program.

  • Develops instructional design and assessment formats for the OHS curriculum in cooperation with the Assistant Deans for Preclinical and Clinical Education

  • Develops and organizes didactic and simulation clinic coursework and exercises.

  • Develops electronic cases and related training manuals for OHS courses in coordination with the other courses

  • Actively engages in the delivery of OHS courses and modules

  • Manages clinical situations based on the best practices model of their discipline or area of expertise as performed in evidence based clinical care.

  • Assures evidence-based clinical care.

  • Assures timely, sequenced, clinically acceptable, safe simulation and patient care.

  • Renders direct care in clinics as required by degree of difficulty or demonstration needs.

  • Ensures the appropriate maintenance of the patient record.

  • Ensure that OSHA and HIPAA policies and procedures are followed in the patient care clinic, especially in relation to the practice of their discipline or area of expertise.

  • Assists where needed in the Continuous Quality Improvement program and other programs directed at improving the quality of care, student learning, patient satisfaction and clinical operations.

  • Maintains a positive image as a representative of Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine-Illinois.

  • Develops and implements student assessment protocols

  • Collects student assessment data, both electronic and hardcopy

  • Interacts with students and faculty in relation to the OHS curriculum

  • Develops and implements calibration and standardization of instructional and assessment methodologies

  • Participates in regular faculty performance appraisals of part-time faculty

  • Participates in the management of faculty schedules

  • Provides and manages discipline related coursework in the classroom, laboratory, simulation clinic, patient care clinic.

  • Contributes to the day-to-day operation and functionality of the simulation clinic, patient care clinic, dispensary and related laboratory areas

Reporting Relationship

In the Simulation Clinic, the Full-time Faculty-Specialist reports directly to the immediate integrated program Course Director. Otherwise, the Full-time Faculty-Specialist reports directly to the relevant Assistant/Associate Dean, Preclinical and/or Clinical Education

Working Relationships

The Full-time Faculty-Specialist interacts significantly with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Associate Dean for Preclinical Education and the Assistant Dean for Clinical Education. Additionally, the Full-time Faculty-Specialist must communicate effectively with the support staff including Administrative Assistants, Dental Assistants, Preclinical & Clinical supervisors and technicians, and staff responsible for audio-visual, maintenance and custodial support functions.

Education and/or Experience

DDS/DMD or equivalent and/or specialty or other post-graduate training – with preference given to those with 3-5years experience in dental education that includes course development, particularly in the realm of their specialty.

Previous experience utilizing educational and simulation technology is desired.

Computer Skills

Computer proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).

Language Skills

High skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information to top management, and boards of directors

High skills: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
