Midwestern University Assistant Professor in Downers Grove, Illinois
The CDMI curriculum comprises integrated oral health science and basic science courses and modules, emphasizing knowledge, skills and values in clinical areas and disciplines (e.g. Prosthodontics, Operative Dentistry, Periodontics, etc.) as required for pre-doctoral education in general comprehensive dentistry.
The Clinical Faculty member is responsible for instruction, course and/or module direction and overall development of the CDMI curriculum, as assigned. Instruction includes teaching in one-to-one, small group and plenary settings, demonstration and facilitation related to clinical situations as well as the use of electronic media as needed.
Essential Job Functions

The Clinical Faculty member performs some or all of the following functions which will be prioritized and will continue to evolve depending on the career direction of the Clinical Faculty member and the mutual goals of that individual, CDMI and the University.
The Clinical Faculty member performs the following functions:
- Modeling and ensuring professional behavior
- Course coordination for courses and/or modules in the Oral Health Sciences (OHS) curriculum of the DMD program.
- Development of instructional design and assessment formats for the OHS curriculum in cooperation with the Associate/Assistant Deans for Preclinical and Clinical Education
- Assisting in the development and organization of didactic and simulation clinic coursework and exercises.
- Assisting in the development of electronic cases and related training manuals for OHS courses in coordination with the other courses
- Active engagement in the delivery of OHS courses and modules
- Management of clinical situations based on the best practices model of the full-time Faculty Specialty’s discipline or area of expertise and as performed in evidence based clinical care.
- Assuring evidence-based clinical care.
- Assuring timely, sequenced, clinically acceptable, safe simulation and patient care.
- Providing direct care in clinics as required by the degree of difficulty or for the purpose of instructional demonstration.
- Ensuring the appropriate maintenance of the electronic patient record.
- Ensuring that OSHA and HIPAA policies and procedures are followed in the patient care clinic
- Assisting where needed in the Continuous Quality Improvement program and other programs directed at improving the quality of care, student learning, patient satisfaction and clinical operations.
- Maintaining a positive image as a representative of Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine-Illinois.
- Assisting in the development and implementation of student assessment protocols
- Collecting student assessment data, both electronic and hardcopy
- Interacting with students and faculty in relation to the OHS curriculum
- Development and implementation of calibration and standardization of instructional and assessment methodologies
- Participation in regular faculty performance appraisals of part-time faculty
- Participation in the management of faculty schedules
- Participation in the provision and management of discipline related coursework in the classroom, laboratory, simulation clinic, patient care clinic.
- Contribution to the day-to-day operation and functionality of the patient care clinic, dispensary and related laboratory areas
- Participation in the recruitment, training and calibration of faculty
In the Simulation Clinic, the Full-time Assistant Professor - Clinical reports directly to the immediate integrated program Course Coordinator. Otherwise, the Full-time Assistant Professor – Clinical reports directly to the relevant Assistant/Associate Dean, Preclinical and/or Clinical Education
The Full-time Faculty-Specialist interacts significantly with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Associate Dean for Preclinical Education and the Assistant Dean for Clinical Education. Additionally, the Full-time Faculty-Specialist must communicate effectively with the support staff including Administrative Assistants, Dental Assistants, Preclinical & Clinical supervisors and technicians, and staff responsible for audio-visual, maintenance and custodial support functions.
This job may include supervisory responsibilities for Adjunct Faculty.

Education and/or Experience
Candidates must possess a DDS/DMD degree or equivalent. Candidates must be licensed, or be eligible for licensure to practice in the State of Illinois. Preference will be given to those with previous experience in dental education that includes course development and delivery, and experience utilizing educational and simulation technology. The successful candidate will be an individual with excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to successfully interact with students, faculty and patients.
Computer proficiency in MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook), ability to learn the axiUm Electronic Health Record, and related programs.
High skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general and professional periodicals and journals, technical procedures and governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information to senior management, and administration. Ability to effectively speak and write fluently and professionally in English.
High skills: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form.
High skills: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.
