NOTE: These are part-time positions (20 hours/week). The salary listed represents full-time employment and will be pro-rated based on the actual number of hours worked each pay-period. Likewise, benefits and time-off accrual will also be prorated and based on your part-time work schedule.
These part-time positions are located at the following James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) in DuBois, PA; and State College, PA. The Health Technician (Audiology) provides assistance to both staff and contract Audiologist(s) in meeting the clinical needs of the patient population. He/she is required to deal directly with Veteran patients and their families in a variety of ways and settings. While under the guidance of the professional Audiology staff, the Health Technician is required to interact with a high level of independence, making appropriate service delivery decisions, seeking clarification and/or assistance when appropriate. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Hearing aid troubleshooting and repairs, electro-acoustic evaluation, and tracking of repair items;
Hearing aid and ear-mold certification and tracking;
Supply orders and management;
Clinic data management, specialized scheduling, and coordination of special clinics and record management; and
Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: PART-TIME - Monday through Friday, 8:00am 12:00noon
DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

English Language Proficiency: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. AND
To qualify for this position at the GS-5 level, you must meet one of the following requirements:
Experience: You must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-4) in the Federal Service that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Health Technician (Audiology). Specialized experience includes, assisting with management of hearing clinic; hearing aid troubleshooting and repair; ear mold impression-taking; operating and using specialized equipment and materials in order to make adaptions and adjustments to hearing aids; knowledge of anatomy and physiology associated with normal and disordered hearing; equipment and supply management. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month & year starting and ending dates AND hours worked per week. OR
EDUCATION: Successful completion of a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position of Health Technician (Hearing). This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcript with your application. OR
COMBINATION: Possess the equivalent combinations of creditable specialized experience and education as described above to meet the total experience requirements for the position. You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:
Knowledge of hearing aid device repair and maintenance.
Knowledge of medical office administrative procedures.
Ability to operate hearing support clinic.
Ability to provide clinic data management and program support.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The duties of this position require periods of sitting, standing, and walking. Working with patients requires regular sitting, bending, and standing. Patient transport occasionally requires the pushing of wheelchairs. Work in front of a computer for several hours per day is required. Some stressful situations may occur when communicating with patients and their families who may have multiple physical, mental, and psychosocial problems and needs. Incumbent may also be required to travel between each of the Altoona VA Medical Center CBOCs to perform duties.
