Job Overview

The Indian Health Service (IHS) is the principal federal health care provider and health advocate for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN). The IHS goal is to raise Indian health status to the highest possible level. IHS provides leadership and direction to programs and activities designed to improve health outcomes to over 1.9 million AI/AN through a system of IHS, Tribal, and Urban operated facilities and programs.

This position is located at the Jicarilla Service Unit (JSU), Public Health Nursing Department in Dulce, NM. This position will be supervised by the Director of Public Health Nursing. The incumbent serves as the Clinical liaison and resource for the PRC staff in clarifying providers referrals/orders; assist with the care of ordering complex and durable, nursing concepts, practices and procedures to perform specialized nursing assignment, (e.g. case management, public health nursing, discharge planning); operations of national and state health care financing, purchased referred care programs, benefits, health care contracts and agreements. Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, families, providers from various disciplines; meeting care goals.

  • The primary responsibilities include clinical case management support to the JSU Purchased Referred Care Program (PRC) and coordinating care between the JSU Outpatient IPC Teams, outside referral sources and PRC.
  • The position provides direct case management services to patients, families, and assist Tribal entities including Behavioral Health and Social Services Programs.
  • Case management promotes the efficient and effective use of a variety of health care resources by focusing on the whole patient to promote access to a seamless continuum of care.
  • The goals are to promote quality patient centered care; decrease the fragmentation of care; and to ensure care is timely, appropriate, cost effective, sensitive and coordinated.

Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level that includes clinical liaison and resource for the Purchased/Referred Care (PRC) staff in coordinating providers referrals/orders; assist with the care of ordering complex and durable, nursing concepts, practices and procedures to perform specialized nursing assignment, (e.g. case management, public health nursing, discharge planning); establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, families, providers from various disciplines.

OR 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education or a master's or equivalent degree.

Selective Factor: In addition to the qualification requirements, to be rated basically qualified for the position, applicants must demonstrate possession of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs).

  • Verification of a current, valid, active, unrestricted license in any State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States is required when filling all positions for registered nurses at all levels.

Public Health Service (PHS) Licensure Policy: Each PHS Nurse must possess and maintain a valid, active, current license/registration as a professional nurse.
