The incumbent serves as a Fee Basis Histopathology Technician providing services within the Pathology and Laboratory Service at the East Orange campus of the VA New Jersey Health Care System (VANJHCS).The position is located in the Histopathology Laboratory of the Department of Pathology. The incumbent, a Histopathology Technician, performs microtomy (i.e., rotary and cryostat), fixation, embedding, trimming and cutting of all surgical tissue specimens including those obtained by MOH surgery and cytology cell blocks. The incumbent performs routine and special stains..

Compensation ($3.06) will be paid to the Histopathology Technician per block to the completion of the case including all the stains*; this is not an hourly rate.*

Work Schedule: Fee-Basis as needed, varying days and hours to include weekends and holidays.

Specialized Experience:Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-*06*) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Working in a laboratory environment assisting a pathologist, examining samples/strains/specimens, preparing routine stains of samples for pathologist review, manipulating pH solutions for use in staining procedures, utilizing computer equipment to upload/review/maintain data logs, and using laboratory specific tools and equipment.


Applicants maysubstitute education for the required specialized experience. 1 year of graduate education is qualifying for the GS-7 level. Graduate education meets the specialized experience for the GS-7 level only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position.


Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-07 level. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-07. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position
