POSITION SUMMARY: Directs shift specific Respiratory Care Practitioners in their daily assignments. Provides completed shift schedule as needed to the Clinical Coordinator by designated time frame. Is proactive in reviewing shift schedule in advance to plan and provide shift coverage for days with below minimum staffing levels. Provides Department Director a shift log of all treatments ordered and initiated during specific shift. Monitors appropriateness of therapy and quality of patient care provided by the RCP's throughout the shift. Ensures all orders are reviewed by staff. Provides ongoing education of staff in all areas of basic therapy, and performs specialized training in critical care areas. Provides counseling, and informs Clinical Coordinator of disciplinary actions taken. Assists therapists in providing coverage for all critical care areas, and provision of floor therapy as needed on a daily basis. Supervisors are expected to use all of these abilities to act as a resource of guidance and decision maker for their respective shift staff members. Facilitates interdisciplinary/interdepartmental communication.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Uses thorough knowledge and understanding of all physiological and mechanical aspects of Respiratory Care to insure quality of services provided by staff. 2. Practices, develops and endorses customer service skills in relationships with internal and external customers. 3. Adjust assignments daily as needed. 4. Provides routine floor, adult and neonatal critical care therapy as needed. 5. Monitors patient quality of care, and appropriateness of therapy. 6. Performs all staff evaluations in a timely and organized fashion within the designated time frame assigned by Director, and actively participates in counseling sessions and pursuing disciplinary action when and if necessary. 7. Assists Department Director in developing department policies and procedures pertinent to new therapy processes. 8. Attends 100 % of department meetings to improve communication between nursing and ancillary services. 9. Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION REQUIRED AND/OR PREFERRED: (list required and preferred separately) Minimum College: Associates degreeORat least25 years in current field of practice, with a Respiratory Care Practitioner Title awarded by the Texas Department of Health, authorizing practitioner to apply for Licensure.
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION: (list required and preferred separately) Current Texas License for Respiratory Care Practitioner required. Current BCLS certification required. NALS, PALS, or ACLS certifications preferred.
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED OR PREFERRED: (list required and preferred separately)
Minimum of two years clinical experience in Respiratory Care required. Minimum of one-year previous experience as a supervisor preferred.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES: Reads and writes basic English Good communication skills both verbal and written. Knowledge of body substance isolation and infection control. Comprehensive knowledge of Respiratory Care concepts. Knowledge of basic research and statistical methods. Able to differentiate between all types of respiratory equipment. Able to teach and mentor staff in critical and non-critical care settings. Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred.
