VA Roseburg Healthcare System is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Occupational Therapist to provide comprehensive assessments and treatment of patients with a wide range of diagnoses including but not limited to post-op orthopedic conditions, post-surgery hands, musculoskeletal disorders, chronic and acute pain, head injury, CVA, rheumatic diseases, neurological conditions, spinal cord injury, amputations, low vision/legal blindness, and dementia. Candidate selected will be responsible for providing care to patients in an outpatient setting at the Eugene Health Care Center, a community based outpatient clinic, located in Eugene, OR. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Provides comprehensive assessments through use of clinically appropriate methods
  • Develops appropriate treatment plans, goals, and time frames based on assessment results
  • Performs full range of therapeutic treatments, activities, modalities, and procedures
  • Modifies and reassesses progress as appropriate and adjusting treatment plans, goals and time frames accordingly
  • Presents patient to primary care providers and other team members providing information regarding functional levels, treatment needs, progress, and continuing goals.
  • Assesses needs for and measures, fits, and instructions patients and caregivers in the safe use of issued adaptive or assistive devices.
  • Monitors patient tolerance for therapeutic procedures recognizing unanticipated rates of progress, significantly altered physical/mental status, or undesirable secondary effects of treatment.
  • May provide services to low vision/legally blind patients facilitating with VA Vision services to assist patient in obtaining timely comprehensive care
  • May participate in home environmental assessments assisting with development of rehab care plans
  • Provides ergonomic consultations, worksite assessments abatement for employees
  • Performs required documentations and workload data entry in a time manner meeting Service, Medical Center, and Joint Commission guidelines
  • Participates in clinical program development
  • May be required to participate in telemedicine clinics as needed.

Basic Requirements:

  • Must be a US Citizen
  • Be a graduate from a degree program in occupational therapy approved by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) or predecessor organization to include an internship (supervised field work experience required by the educational institution.) Foreign graduates of occupational therapy programs meet the requirements if they have a current, full, active, and unrestricted license/certification/registration/trademark referred to in the the qualification standard.
  • Possession of written documentation that you have passed the entry-level certification examination for OTs which is administered by the National Board of Certification of Occupational Therapy (NBCOT)
  • Hold a full, current, and unrestricted state license, certification, registration, or trademark to practice occupational therapy in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States (i.e. Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia.
  • Meet the physical requirements of the position. Pre-employment physical will be required.
  • Be proficient in spoken and written English.

Preferred Experience:

Preferred candidate will have recent experience in post-operative hand therapy and orthotic construction, have two (2) years of experience working in an adult rehab or outpatient setting and current experience working in an adult rehab inpatient and outpatient setting. They must be able to independently provide assessment and treatment for a wide variety of diagnosis with an emphasis on geriatrics.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Grade Determination:

GS-11: In addition to meeting the basic requirements, applicant must have at least one year of more progressively complex experience and a broader scope of experience equivalent to the the next lower grade directly related to the position being filled, or have 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a degree in occupational therapy or a directly related field. The GS-11 grade level is considered to be the full performance level for this occupation and at this level staff OTs practice independently and are responsible for performing occupational therapy assessments and treatment interventions. OTs must demonstrate a full professional understanding of the theories of treatment in occupational therapy and their proper application through use of activity analysis, behavioral intervention, frame of references, and therapeutic procedures. At this level OTs must demonstrate all of the following knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics: Knowledge of advanced occupational therapy techniques to perform functions associated within the occupational therapy scope of practice; ability to communicate orally and in writing; ability to adapt assessment tools and treatment to the complexity of the diagnosis or disabilities and demonstrate the clinical reasoning necessary to identify the needs for further in depth specific assessment of function and utilization of non-standards methods and techniques; knowledge of principles and techniques in the occupational therapy assessment and treatment of occupational, cognitive, and psychological functional deficits; ability to interact with patients, families, and other health care providers; ability to facilitate and instruct in-service and clinical training programs; and knowledge and ability to apply all health and safety regulations to minimize an mitigate risks in the provision of patient care and environmental maintenance.
