The Fargo VA Health Care System is a Level 2 Medical Center and a member of Veterans Integrated Service Network 23. This facility combines a 39 bed medical facility along with a 38 bed Community Living Center providing transitional care, both accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. Fargo also has a Department of Veterans Affairs Benefits Office on campus, offering veterans the unique opportunity to obtain health care, benefits services, and Readjustment Counseling at one location. Due to the growing veteran population in our service area, ten Community Based Outpatient Clinics have been established. The Fargo Health Care System provides a wide spectrum of primary and tertiary acute and extended care inpatient and outpatient activities in an academic setting. The Fargo Health Care System has an active research program and has a successful affiliation with the University of North Dakota School of Medicine.

  1. General Description:

A primary objective of the Primary Care/Specialty Medicine Service Line is to mentor and lead competent, satisfied staff dedicated to providing high quality patient-centered care at the Fargo VA Health Care System (FVAHCS). The ACOS, PC is a department level management position supporting this objective through administrative leadership. The incumbent is responsible for the direct management and oversight of clinical and administrative operations within the primary care division of the service line which includes over 30 PACT teamlets. These duties include direct supervision of physicians and mid-level providers at the Medical Center and the 10 affiliated CBOCs, coordination of work schedules and responsibility for clinical performance measures. The incumbent works closely with other leaders within the service line and facility to ensure optimization of resources in the care delivery model. Additionally, s/he participates in local administrative, management, quality assurance, and other assignments, meetings or committees as necessary or assigned.

Excellent communication skills are a key competency for the position. The incumbent will be expected to facilitate communication up and down the Service Line and will be the primary conduit of information to his/her colleagues/subordinates as well as to Service Line leadership.

The ACOS, PC may have clinical duties assigned in the Fargo primary care clinics or as otherwise specified based on the unique skills and desires of the candidate. It is anticipated that the position will be at least 75% administrative, but may vary depending on the needs of the facility/service line.

Typical work hours are Monday through Friday, 0800 – 1630

Basic Requirements*: *

  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

Board certification or possess equivalent training and experience. A proven track record demonstrating strong leadership and managerial experience.
