Roles and Responsibilities:

  1. Demonstrates leadership in delivering and improving holistic care utilizing collaborative strategies with patients, family members/significant others, and members of the interdisciplinary team.

  2. Directly accountable to the Chief Nurse of Patient Care Services.

  3. Responsible for providing leadership in delivering and improving holistic patient care through collaborative strategies with others.

  4. Responsible and accountable for the provision of patient care on a defined unit and is responsible and accountable for the management and supervision of all nursing personnel and support staff as assigned.

  5. Responsible and accountable for demonstrating the educational, experiential, and knowledge/practice-based competency requirements outlined in the four (4) dimensions: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry.

  6. Communicate and interact appropriately and courteously with all internal and external customers.

  7. Provides leadership in the application of the nursing process to client care, organizational processes and/or systems, improving outcomes at the program or service level.

  8. Implements an educational plan to meet changing program or service needs for self and others. Maintains knowledge of current techniques, trends and professional issues.

  9. Coaches colleagues in team building. Makes sustained contributions to healthcare by sharing expertise within and/or outside the medical facility.

  10. Initiates interdisciplinary projects to improve organizational performance.

  11. Collaborate with others in research activities to improve care.

  12. Others duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Primary Hours are Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm. Responsible for the unit/staffing 24hrs per day.

Basic Requirements:

  • U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Full, unrestricted licensure, certification, or registration required.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate state accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accreditation bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant, Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirements of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6).

Preferred Experience: BSN required. Two (2) years of management experience required.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Requirements:

The position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, shifting, bending, pulling and pushing. Transferring Veterans and objects may be required. Staff may be required to don protective equipment in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. They may also be exposed to Veterans who are combative, secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders.
