With primary campuses at Fort Meade and Hot Springs and numerous Community Based Outpatient Clinics, VA BHHCS provides primary and secondary medical and surgical care, along with Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program services, for Veterans from North and South Dakota, Wyoming and Nebraska. VA Black Hills Health Care is part of the VA Midwest Health Care Network (VISN 23) - where we've been caring for America's Heroes for over 100 years.


The Physician provides inpatient and outpatient consultations in hospice and palliative care per facility guidelines, inpatient direct patient care on a 12 bed hospice unit, and educates Black Hills Health Care System (BHHCS) Staff on hospice and palliative care. The Physician works collaboratively with the Hospice and Palliative Care Team at BHHCS. Family meetings, goal-setting discussions, recommendations for symptomatic management, advance directive discussions, code status discussions, and all related matters are all essential components of this position. Coverage for the Medical Director of the CLC-BHHCS (Community Living Center also known as Nursing Home Care Unit) may occasionally be necessary. A controlled substance license (DEA registration) is required for this position, and should allow for the full range of palliative prescriptions.

Work Schedule: Day Shift, Monday through Friday, 7:00AM to 4:00PM.

In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following:

Basic Requirements:

  • Citizenship of the United States. Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with Department of Veterans Affairs policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

*Preferred Experience: *Preferably a geriatrician with hospice and palliative care experience

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
