About the Position:This position is located at the US Army Dental Activity, Fort Sam Houston, TX which is located in beautiful and historic San Antonio and is within easy commuting distance of desirable neighborhoods and excellent school systems. San Antonio offers mild winters, low cost of living, and no personal state income tax. Fort Sam Houston civilians enjoy use of post recreation facilities i.e., fitness centers, golf course, bowling alley, outdoor rec areas, auto craft shop, equestrian center and on Post Dining Facilities.

You will perform duties in providing assistance in one or more phases or restorative, prosthodontics, oral surgical, endodontic, or periodontal treatment. Receive and schedule patients for treatment. Obtain and record related medical history of patient. Chart examination and treatment information. Record information on prescriptions. Sterilize instruments, materials, and equipment, and prepare surgical trays. Maintain dental equipment in a clean and operative condition. Assist dentist at chair side. Perform intra-oral procedures as directed by dentist. Take preliminary impressions for study models, remove structures, and place and remove rubber dams, perio packs and matrix bands and wedges. Relay dentist's instructions to patient for post-treatment care. Instruct patient in proper dental techniques, care of appliances and causes of dental decay. Operate dental X-ray equipment to take intra and extra oral radiographs. Maintain, clean and perform minor repairs on X-ray equipment and materials. Pour and trim models from impressions, and constructs custom impression trays. Maintain a variety of recurring reports related to dental activities.

Successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards describes in 42 CFR, Part 75 regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education. (Note: You must attach a copy of your certifications.) OR

Been employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel prior to the effective date of the regulation (January 13, 1986) who can show evidence of current or fully satisfactory performance or certification of such from a licensed practitioner such as a doctor of medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, podiatry, or chiropractic who prescribes radiologic procedures to others. (Note: you must submit supporting documents i.e. statement of service, transcripts, certifications) OR

Been first employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel after the effective date of the regulation who (a) received training from institutions in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not accredit training in that particular field at the time of graduation, or (b) practiced in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not license that particular field or did not allow special eligibility to take a licensure examination for those who did not graduate from an accredited educational program, provided such persons show evidence of training, experience, and competence, as determined by OPM or the employing agency. (Note: you must submit supporting documents i.e. statement of service, transcripts, certifications.)


Experience required: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Experience is defined as: at least six (6) months of general experience and six (6) months of specialized experience that involved providing dental assistance utilizing dental instruments, materials, and standardized procedures used in all phases of restorative, prosthodontic, oral surgical, endodontic, and periodontal treatment provided in general dentistry to make preparations and provide chair side assistance. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service GS-03.

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities) in the following areas:

  • Knowledge of Patient Care
  • Knowledge of Dental Instrument/Equipment Maintenance and Operation
  • Ability to Assist Dentist at Chair Side

Successfully completed a 2-year dental assistant program or a 2-year dental hygiene program accredited by the American Dental Association's Commission on Accreditation that included at least 12 semester hours of courses in radiation physics, radiation biology, radiation health, safety and protection, X-ray films and radiographic film quality, radiographic technique, darkroom and processing and film mounting or practical nurse training. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

Foreign education must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency in order to be considered for this position. You must include this information with your application package.
