About the Position:

This position is located in the Department of Primary Care at Brooke Army Medical Center; Fort Sam Houston, TX. Duties for this position will be performed at the Northwest Community Based Medical Home (Westover). Fort Sam Houston is located in beautiful San Antonio, TX with a warm climate, close proximity to beaches, and a population of approximately 1 million people. Additionally, there are many surrounding smaller towns within a 30 mile radius including Universal City, Converse, Kirby, Shertz, and Cibolo. For those who prefer country living, ranches and property can be easily found in the big and beautiful State of Texas.

You will perform duties such as perform laboratory testing in Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, and Urinalysis. Perform phlebotomy on individuals as directed by laboratory management staff. Operate and set up laboratory equipment. Perform difficult and complex laboratory examinations and procedures. Manage patient results status by verifying and certifying results input into laboratory computer system. Perform a broad variety of automated and manual procedures related to the quality and quantity of constituents of human blood, plasma, and other body fluids. Perform and monitor a wide variety of tests using moderately complex automated analytical systems. Receive laboratory requests along with specimens and selects tests and procedures required to identity microorganisms and parasites known to invade man. Perform a variety of microscopic, macroscopic and chemical analyses in Urinalysis. Perform phlebotomy on individuals as directed by laboratory management staff. Conduct necessary quality control procedures. Perform other duties as assigned.

Experience required: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: performing laboratory testing in three or more of the following areas: chemistry, hematology, microbiology and urinalysis; performing phlebotomy; operating/maintaining laboratory instruments/equipment; and performing quality control procedures.

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities) in the following areas:

  • Knowledge of Laboratory Procedures
  • Skill in Operating Laboratory Equipment
  • Skill in Clinical Pathology Testing
  • Ability to Perform Administrative Duties in a Laboratory Setting

Education Substitution for Specialized Experience for GS-07: Successful completion of at least one full year of graduate-level education progressing toward a master's or higher degree that is directly related to the work of the position.

Combination of Experience and Education Substitution for Specialized Experience for GS-07: If you have some, but not all, of the experience or education described above, you may still qualify by combining the amount of creditable experience and education that you possess. To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of graduate education by 18. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100% to qualify. Foreign education must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency in order to be considered for this position.
