Education / Licensure / Certification
EDUCATION: Required: High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) Preferred: Associates Healthcare Related Field or Bachelor's degree
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY/LISTING: Required: Successful completion of a Medical Interpretation Training Course. Medical Interpretation Training such as Bridging the Gap, AHEC Interpretation Training (levels I, II, and III), Community College Medical Interpreter certificate or others will satisfy the requirement. Preferred: Certified by the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI), or certified by the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI)
EXPERIENCE: Required: Two (2) years of experience as medical interpreter with HS Diploma or GED; one (1) year of experience as a medical interpreter with an Associate’s degree or Bachelor’s degree. Successful completion of Interpreter Skills Assessment to measure medical terminology and interpretation skills in English & target language.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Required:
Ability to function as a medical interpreter in both English and target language.
Ability to communicate verbally and written in target language.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally (up to 1/3 of the time), and/or; up to 10 pounds of force frequently (1/3 to 2/3 of the time), and/or; a negligible amount of force constantly (2/3 or more of the time) to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job should be rated Light Work: (1) when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree; or (2) when it requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or (3) when the job requires working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of those materials is negligible. JOB SUMMARY: Provides interpreting services to limited English proficiency patients receiving care through Cone Health. Works collaboratively with Cone Health staff to assure that patients’ rights are protected and that appropriate and accurate information is communicated to individual patients verbally, written, and in organizational information and/or consent forms.
MAJOR WORK ACTIVITIES: Provides interpreting services, including consecutive interpretation, and/or simultaneous interpretation, and/or sight translation when needed. Ensures timely, accurate, and compassionate interpretation of information to limited English proficiency patients and their family members. 50%
Maintains awareness of limited English proficiency patients on assigned campuses and seeks opportunities to assist healthcare team with interpretation, and clarification when necessary. Proactively ensures appropriate utilization of resources and achievement of optimal patient outcomes in compliance with regulatory agency requirements 10%
Helps other members of the healthcare team identify, understand and address patients' cultural and religious health practices and beliefs by acting as a Cultural Broker. Engaging limited English proficiency patients and their families in the healthcare process, serving as a liaison between both cultures when needed to ensure informed understanding of healthcare issues and plans. Actively promotes and facilitates communication between limited English proficiency patients and the healthcare team, informally educating physicians and staff with regard to psychosocial issues impacting care plan and outcomes as needs arise. 10%
Serves as an advocate within Cone Health and in the community with regard to healthcare needs of limited English proficiency patients, interfacing with organizational administration when necessary to proactively identify opportunities for improvement with regard to patient care and outcomes 10%
Identifies documents needing translation and directs need to the appropriate process. Responds to requests to assist with sight translation for patient-specific documents in a positive, timely manner, re-prioritizing schedule when necessary for urgent requests. Initiates opportunities to assist administrative areas with written communication with limited English proficiency patients. Identifies and informs leadership of examples of non-compliance with organizational policies and procedures with regard to the provision of accurately translated documents. 10%
Contributes to process improvement initiatives. Reviews, interprets and applies new processes and procedures with regard to the provision of interpreting services throughout Cone Health. Identifies opportunities to enrich the department and/or the organization by measuring the success of interpreting interventions and devising strategies for data collection and evaluation. Participates in the implementation and evaluation of new strategies for improving the quality and efficiency of interpretation services throughout the system. Reviews and shares literature relevant to current cultural and linguistic interventions and issues. 10%
