This position is a Modified Term and can be extended up to 6 years with approval. Employee may be eligible for conversion to Career-Conditional Appointment under Merit Promotion procedures and in accordance with Federal Register Vol 6, #57 dated 3-25-98 and employee must have a current performance score of 2.5 or better.
About the Position: These positions are with the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), Security Office, Hanover, New Hampshire. The incumbent will serve as a Security Guard engaged in protecting property, materials, and equipment as well as personnel against injury, damage, fire, theft and possible acts of sabotage and espionage.
This position authorizes the incumbent to carry a firearm. Any person who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence cannot lawfully possess a firearm or ammunition (Title 18, U.S.C., Section 922(g)(91). Candidates who have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence are not qualified for this position. Candidates under consideration will be required to certify whether they have ever been convicted of such an offense. False or fraudulent information provided by candidates is criminally punishable by fine or imprisonment (Title 18, U.S.C., Section 1001).

As an armed Security Guard, you will be engaged in protecting personnel, property, materials, and equipment against injury, damage, fire, theft, and possible acts of sabotage, espionage and terrorism. You will perform Security Guard duties during duty and non-duty hours. You will respond to incidents of theft, burglary, or other criminal activity; controls access to the facility after hours and on weekends; search and escort various types of supply and delivery vehicles; static guard duties; perform roving security patrol and traffic control duties; operates radios to pass and receive clear-cut information and protect sensitive and restricted areas. These duties also include the following:
Performs static guard duties at a stationary post. Welcomes all Engineering Research & Development Center (ERDC) team members, visitors, high ranking officials upon arrival at the ERDC gates with courtesy and respect. At a minimum all entering are greeted with Good Morning, Good Afternoon, or Good Evening. Security Guards are helpful and assist in directing any visitor to the appropriate location or Public Affairs Office. Performs roving security duties in a Security Guard vehicle or on foot. Conducts security checks of ERDC assets. Performs traffic control duties on a routine basis and for special events. Issues citations for traffic violations. Performs preliminary traffic accident investigations and generates reports. Responds to fire alarms and intrusion detection systems. Performs access control functions at classified meetings. Performs duties related to the destruction of classified material via burning/shredding. Responds to incidents of theft, burglary, or other criminal activity. Control access to the facility after hours and on weekends, monitors Closed Circuit TVs. Qualify with, wear and be able to use assigned weapon. Ability to generate clear and concise statements on reports and guard log. Performs duties as specified by the ERDC Antiterrorism Plan and Physical Security Plan. Perform Preventive Maintenance Checks and Services on Security Vehicles. Inspect and service fire extinguishers. No guard will leave their post until properly relieved. Comply with Security Guard Force Manual requirements.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
This position is covered by the Science and Technology Laboratory Personnel Management Demonstration Project and this pay band includes the General Schedule grades equivalent to GS-04/05.
To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. To qualify based on your work experience, your resume must describe 6 months of general experience at the DK-01 level (GS-03) such as administrative, technical, clerical, military, or other work that involved following written procedures, rules, or regulations in contacts with coworkers, supervisors, or members of the public to provide a service; responding to inquiries, or obtaining information; AND 6 months of specialized experience working with a Federal, State, municipal, local, or private protective organization that involved the protection of property against such hazards as fire, theft, damage, accident, or trespass; and maintaining order and protecting life. Acceptable experience includes service in the Armed Services or Coast Guard that involved the performance of guard duties on a regular or intermittent basis.

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement. This is a DOD Demonstration Project position. This announcement MAY be used to fill like vacancies for 6 months after the closing date.
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify.
Education: Successfully completed study at an accredited college or university in any subject is fully qualifying in the amount and level specified in the Qualification Standards for Security Guards.
OR Training: Successful completion of training in an accredited technical school that covered subjects such as physical security procedures, local laws, or investigative techniques is considered qualifying for specialized experience at the GS-4 level on a month-for-month basis.
