What will I do?

The test engineer designs, develops, and implements cost-effective

methods of testing and troubleshooting systems and equipment. Prepares test and

diagnostic programs, designs test fixtures and equipment, and completes

specifications and procedures for new products. Plans the labor, schedules, and

equipment needed for testing and evaluating standard and special devices.

The Test Engineer is a position within the World Wide Operations

organization and is an important part of server product production. Test Engineers (TEs) are a combination of

Hardware and Software Engineering and belong to a small team. TEs are delegated to a product (or product

line) to support. In this role, the TE

develops code for test infrastructure and connectivity, test customer systems,

perform software downloads and do troubleshooting all to insure a standard of

performance for each product to which they are assigned. TEs coordinate with various engineering

groups to develop and implement test plans.

They also provide support to the production floor and even possess the

power to influence change for their assigned product or product line. This position is a rewarding and meaningful

What are you looking for in a candidate?

  • BS in Computer Science

  • Experience in Linux/UNIX/Solaris

  • Basic computer architecture and familiarity with hardware components

  • Ability to write/ develop software code (Java, Perl, shell scripting,TCL)

  • System Administration skills in Linux/UNIX/Solaris

  • Experience with networking and connectivity

  • Ability to test hardware, download and install software and performtroubleshooting

  • Experience or knowledge of writing test cases to verify softwarequality

  • An ability to document test procedures, issue resolutions and trackresults

  • Familiarity with product development life cycle

  • Test Engineers report to the manufacturing facility and are presentand available for the various teams that they interact with but the nature ofthe work also enables for work activities to be performed virtually as well.

Whatis expected of me?

Short-Term Expectations – 1 Month

  • Submit and process requests in the necessary systems including BugDB,Subversion, MyHelp Support, FAES

  • Execute an automated test profile on a lab system including thedelivery in and out of the unit

  • Gain agreement on the implementation of at least one Change Requestand complete and test the code changes

  • Build and deploy a test software release

  • Build a test profile using the CCK that utilizes the GRP and/or SRP

Medium-Term Expectations – 3 Months for Senior Hire, 6 Months

for Junior Hire

  • Handle resolution of all Service Requests for a product line

  • Accurately triage all Event Trackers on a product line

  • Identify and log Change Requests for one or more common issuesoccurring on a product line

  • Work and test CRs within the product line or common code

  • Successfully qualify a new software image for a product

  • Effectively utilize common systems used in testing including VTS,Liveboot and ILOM software

Long-Term Expectations – 1 Year for Senior Hire, 1.5 Years

for Junior Hire

  • Own a product line end to end including the following responsibilities

  • Setting and driving towards test software release dates

  • Ensuring deliverance of all changes required for a product

  • Providing first or second level floor support

  • Managing test software in line with product driven ECO dates

  • Accounting for cycle time and test stop metrics

  • Demonstrate proficiency in the use of the GRP and/or SRP

Detailed Description and Job Requirements

Design, develop, troubleshoot and debug software programs for databases, applications, tools, networks etc.

As a member of the software engineering division, you will apply basic to intermediate knowledge of software architecture to perform software development tasks associated with developing, debugging or designing software applications or operating systems according to provided design specifications. Build enhancements within an existing software architecture and occasionally suggest improvements to the architecture.

Duties and tasks are standard with some variation; displays understanding of roles, processes and procedures. Performs moderately complex problem solving with assistance and guidance in understanding and applying company policies and processes. BS degree or equivalent experience relevant to functional area. 1 year of software engineering or related experience.
