Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital, located 12 miles west of downtown Chicago on a 147-acre campus, offers primary, extended and specialty care and serves as a tertiary care referral center for VISN 12. Specialized clinical programs include Blind Rehabilitation, Spinal Cord Injury, Neurosurgery, Radiation Therapy and Cardiovascular Surgery. The hospital also serves as the VISN 12 southern tier hub for pathology, radiology, radiation therapy, and fiscal services.

Hines VAH currently operates 471 beds and six community based outpatient clinics in Kankakee, Elgin, Oak Lawn, Aurora, LaSalle, and Joliet. Over 700,000 patient visits occurred in fiscal year 2014 providing care to over 56,000 veterans, primarily from Cook, DuPage and Will counties. In FY 2015 the budget for Hines was over $500 million.

Hines VAH is affiliated with 70 colleges and universities and 40 associated health professions. The main medical school affiliation is the Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University of Chicago. There are over 1,300 students educated annually at Hines.

The Hines VAH is recruiting for a full time Psychiatrist. Primary functions include:

Treatment: by offering psychiatric treatment using traditional face-to-face or telehealth modalities to veteran patients, providing assessments and interventions which are appropriate to the needs of the veteran, to supervise and educate psychiatric residents and medical students, to attend appropriate administrative meetings, to serve as the on-call psychiatrist, to coordinate with other providers to effectively facilitate services, comply with all CPRS documentation procedures, including timeliness standards for documentation and proper patient check out procedures (e.g. entering diagnostic and procedure codes).

Support the mission of the VA : by ensuring the highest quality of care for our veterans by assisting in the execution of ongoing program evaluation and data-driven quality improvement projects, to monitor the effectiveness of clinical programs. Complies with national and local performance measures, including timely health care screening and completion of clinical reminders for all patients. Comply with Mental Health peer review procedures. Participates in other committee assignments as instructed.

Work Schedule: Full time, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, On-call duties include rotating daytime consultation to the ED patients, occasional weekend coverage, and rotating weekday evening phone coverage. Functional Statement Title/#: Staff Psychiatrist

Basic Requirements:

  • Citizenship of the United States. Non citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with Department of Veterans Affairs policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
