This position is located at the Hines VA Hospital. The medical center is a part of VA Great Lakes Healthcare System (Network 12), which includes facilities in Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan.

The Clinical Research Nurse practices within the scope of the Illinois Nurse Practice Act to ensure the delivery of comprehensive, high quality, and individualized nursing care, based upon knowledge and experience, while being responsible for all aspects of coordinating clinical trials as delegated by the Principal Investigator(s), under all applicable policies, procedures and regulations.
He or she facilitates, maintains, and coordinates the logistical aspects of assigned study protocols with other research staff in accordance with Good Clinical Practice, standard operating procedures, applicable nursing practices, and sponsor requirements. The clinical research nurse performs all other functions related to this job such as obtaining informed consents, preparing and sending out specimens per protocol to authorized labs, and ordering research study medication with pharmacy per each protocol. This individual maintains patient logs, medication and study visit calendars, and aids in recruitment of patients for clinical studies.
The clinical research nurse arranges for procedures and applicable clinical study-related tests as well as maintaining continual clinical assessment of study subjects. This individual attends investigator meetings, coordinates and attends pre-study site visits, study initiation visits, and all other study-related visits by monitors or sponsor representatives, when required. He or she arranges and participates in audits and study visits that are necessary to the conduct of the study. These audits and study visits may involve the institutional review board (IRB), National Institute of Health (NIH), Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG), Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) and other agencies, internally and externally.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 7:30am-4:00pm.

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
The completion of course work equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
*Grade Determinations: *The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
- Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
- Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
- Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; ORa Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
- Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; ORa Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
- Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience
BSN or BS in a related field
Certification in Clinical Research and Oncology Biotherapy Courses preferred at the time of hire, or applicant must become certified within one year of hire
Current certification preferred: CCRC (Certified Clinical Research Coordinator) from ACRP or CCRP (Certified Clinical Research Professional) from SoCRA or must become certified within two years of hire
Two to five years of experience in oncology clinical trials
AHA BLS Certification

Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel. The criteria are as follows:

- Scientific Inquiry: quality of care, research.
Physical Requirements:Walking, bending, stooping, and some lifting in the direct care of patients. There may also be extended periods of sitting.
