The incumbent has .5 FTEE clinical duties for Visual Impairment Services Team throughout VA Black Hills system of care. Those duties will include coordination of services needed by qualifying visually impaired veterans to include assessment of life functioning, referral to blind rehab centers and coordination of eye care and access to visual aids. The incumbent will also provide .5 FTEE social work services on the acute medical ward of the facility (1 East-10 beds) and the 7 Bed CLC unit also located on the 1 East Ward of the Hot Springs Campus of VA Black Hills Health Care System. The incumbent will also serve as backup to the Outpatient PACT Social Work staff member.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 7:30am - 4:00pm

Basic Requirements:

Citizenship: Citizen of the United States Education: Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the school of social work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work.

Licensure. Senior social workers must be licensed or certified by a state at the advanced practice level which included an ASWB advanced generalist or clinical examination. Physical Requirements. Must satisfactorily complete a pre-employment physical. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019. English Language Proficiency. Social Workers must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).


GS-12 Social Worker Program Coordinators. Program coordinators at the GS-12 grade are administratively responsible for a clinical program providing treatment to patients in a major specialty, such as Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) coordinators, Visual Impairment Services Team (VIST) coordinators, Homeless Veterans Program (HVP) coordinators, Community Nursing Home Program (CNHP) coordinators. They may be the sole practitioner in this specialty at the facility and typically provide direct patient care services in the program area. They manage the daily operation of the program, develop policies and procedures for program operation, and prepare reports and statistics for facility, VISN, and national use. They may be responsible for the program's budget. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the professional KSAs below.

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  1. In-depth knowledge of the program coordinated, and demonstrated knowledge and ability to write policies, procedures, and/or practice guidelines for the program.

  2. Knowledge and skill in management/administration, which includes supervision, consultation, negotiation, and monitoring.

  3. Ability to supervise multidisciplinary staff assigned to the program.

  4. Ability to organize work, set priorities, meet multiple deadlines, and evaluate assigned program area(s).

  5. Ability to provide training, orientation, consultation and guidance within clinical specialization of practice.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Requirements: The physical demands of this position involve primarily walking, talking, driving, use of the telephone, etc. Strenuous physical activity is not required although the incumbent is expected to withstand pressure and stress as part of their day-to-day activities. The incumbent observes normal safety precautions while working primarily in an office type environment. Most of the time the incumbent operates in an environment that is well lighted, clean, and does not pose a hazard to personal safety.
