Duties

The Division of Hematology/Oncology in the Department of Medicine at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, Houston, Texas seeks an energetic and skilled leader at the Associate or Full Professor level. The successful candidate will be a physician-scientist with expertise in basic or translational research, care of the patient with hematologic and/or oncologic disorders, administration, and education. Candidates with clinical and research interests in any area of hematology or oncology are welcome to apply; those interested in combined hematologic / oncologic malignancies are particularly encouraged. Michael E. DeBakey VAMC is a teaching facility affiliated with Dan L. Duncan Cancer Center and the Department of Medicine the Baylor College of Medicine.

The Chief will foster excellence in research and in the delivery of high quality clinical care. He/she will sustain the strong pre- and post-doctoral educational programs in the Division. Appropriate resources will be available for the Chief to accomplish these goals.

The successful candidate will have completed an Oncology / Hematology fellowship at an ACGME accredited institution. ABIM Board Certification strongly preferred. The candidate will have at least ten (5-10) years of clinical practice in Oncology / Hematology and at least five (5) years of experience in a leadership position. He or she will have directed a facility-level Cancer Committee, worked as a Cancer Program Administrator, participated in the accreditation of an Oncology program from the Commission on Cancer and / or American College of Surgeons, and had experience directing a Cancer Registry. The successful candidate should have supervised other Oncologists / Hematologists, mid-level providers (NP's, PA's). Previous involvement in the teaching of medical students and residents is highly desired. Research experience in clinical trials and VA Grants is a strong plus. Prior leadership experience in clinical research, service line development and expansion as well as the ability to build cohesive teams to provide best outcomes is critical. Excellent communication skills, business acumen and personal in integrity are essential. At the MEDVAMC, we provide a comprehensive range of techniques for cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. We have high expertise in colorectal, hepatobiliary, pancreatic, ENT, urologic, and thoracic surgery. Our radiation oncology department is a leader in stereotactic body radiation therapy within the VA system. We count with highly skilled interventional radiologists and interventional pulmonologists. The number of new cancer patients seen every year at MEDVAMC continues to increase. Over a thousand newly diagnosed cancer patients were seen at our institution last year. These patients are being cared for in a multidisciplinary environment, with the majority of cases being presented in their corresponding tumor boards. In addition, we provide this same level of care to our veterans who live in rural areas and other cities who come for higher level of care. And we do so with the most advanced technology such as tele-health and virtual tumor boards.

Work Schedule; 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, Monday - Friday plus weekends, excluding Federal Holidays, except when rounding on the inpatient service or longer (Depending on the patient volume in the Cancer Center and while attending the Medicine Team). Qualifications

Basic Requirements*: *

  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

Preferred Experience: ABIM Board Certification strongly preferred.
